Should I force a patina on my beckers?

Excellent, how long did it take you to do it?

Came out great

Thanks, Flexxx. From the time I picked up the heating iron to the time I was completely satisfied, about two hours on and off while watching TV. It could have been done in a shorter time but I kept playing with it to get it just how I wanted it.

Wow, great job! All the stippling I've seen has resulted in big, messy holes and craters...effective I guess, but not pretty IMO. Yours looks almost factory, like the texture on a BK14 sheath. It looks very even and clean.

I forced a patina on my BK2 and it looked nice but didn't really protect it from rusting. I live in a really humid, salty coast area and after a week it began to rust in spots. Went back to oiling it for protection but it still looks good with the patina...

I like to force a patina on all my knives. It just lets 'em know who's boss.

I keep my stripped, patina'ed blades oiled at all times.

peh21, wow those are gorgeous! I'm tempted to do that to one of mine, but I'm afraid I, too would then not want to use it! I'm so used to seeing Beckers showing a lot of wear, and they look so good that way, but I do love that gunmetal finish, especially with the original black grivory. They just look, I don't know , RIGHT, somehow. Does that make any sense?

I makes sense to me :) Thanks, osodavis. I was surprised at how aesthetically pleasing they tirned out. Like I said, I didn't do anything fancy, just soaked them in white vinegar for around 45 minutes till the tiny bubbles stopped (the oxidation process, I'm assuming). I do hope to get some wear marks on them as soon as the weather cools off enough here in south Georgia for me to get outside.
