should I get a Manix 2?

Just how large is it in your hand? (guess that's subjective, as one might have smaller, or larger, hands than others....)

Would a FFG S90V Manix2 cut better than a HG 154CM Manix2? Depends.

Hollow ground gives thinner stock for the first half of the blade and tests from Deacon show it actually out-performed the original mini Manix in some activities. The tip is a little thicker on the M2 so some penetration (eg: Phone books) are going to hold the M2 back. That said, the tip is is an amazing combination of point/reinforcement...the best of my knives.

The edge on a FFG model will stay sharp longer due to the harder steel. It will break down cardboard boxes (for example) easier and for a longer amount of time between sharpenings.

I think the M2 in 154cm is a good knife. For $65-85 it's an AMAZING knife. It's a heavy duty folder and 154cm is definitely still a premium stainless steel that will take quite a bit of torsional shock. Remember, for 99% of the audience it's basically an American VG10 for sake of wear/ease of sharpening, etc.

I have plans on getting a ZDP Stretch as my box destroyer. The M2's my "end of the world" backup :) Sure it could whittle, break down boxes, and open mail but it's not exactly a lightweight EDC pocket razor.

PS: Not to get into brand vs brand wars, but I do agree with what one person said in that BM has used 154 in HG blades for years and nobody cares but anything short of S30v and the Spyderco AFI's roll their eyes. My M2 came out of the box so sharp that it could turn paper into dust.

I think we should be glad we get the option to see S90v/ZDP and not knock Spyderco for having price-point values like the M2 Standard Edition. It makes one helluva nice beater knife for anyone! Buy both!

Very well thought out post.

How strong is the polymer cage on the Mannix 2?

You'd have to get an answer straight from Spyderco, but how strong does it need to be? It's not just plastic though, it is a very durable polymer that I haven't been able to damage.

Aye agreed on the cage.

With the advent of Glock guns (and others) we have been shown that plastic/polymers can be very strong.

Luckily, the ball bearing takes the abuse of the locking mechanism. The polymer just supplies traction and extends the bearing from the spring a few millimeters to the proper position. I like the fact that the slightly larger locking mechanism (ball plus cage vs w/o) seems as it will keep dirt out better.

The lock is very strong and I would surprised if the plastic was anything but nigh-bulletproof. ;)

I got my M2 over the weekend. It feels great in hand - the ergos work really well for me. The action is butta smooth and the lock up is tight. I like the angle at which the edge presents to what you're cutting. The grind at the tip of the knife does seem to be a little "off", but I can live with this. I really like all the jimping and the blade is super sharp. I've had no problems disengaging the lock - one handed or two handed.

I was a little worried because others have said it's a little chunky for EDC, but I've found it carries well - better than my Ritter Grip - for example. Overall, I'm really please.

It will loosen up a ton over time. You can also loosen the pivot a little bit and it will make a ton of difference.

Mine game all silky while my bro's was a little stiff. Now his is a better 1-hander than mine (once the pivot was adjusted).

Enjoy your tankfolder!

Shoot, if I had a dollar for every time I was faced with this exact situation I'd have enough for a new knife:eek::D
I'm having one of those impulsive moments and feel the need to buy something - even though I know I shouldn't spend the money!
