should I get a RAT3 or the ENZO kit?

Mikel, You can use a mouse pad on the scandi grind. There are no rules. I strop by scandi and hollow ground blades on a piece of leather loaded with rubbing compound and works well. Some times I use a an Arkansas stone and sometimes I use one of those yellow things with the carbide and ceramic sharpeners on it.

Thanks for the input collecter... I am sure that anything out there can be sharpened with any of the systems we all know about. I was just thinking of maintaining the flat bevels of the Scandy grind. If I keep sharpenning it with sandpaper and a leather strop... I will eventually end up with a convex edge.

Maybe this is the reason I need to get me some nice bench stones!

Mikel,

You don't need big bench stones for the scandi. Just get yourself a piece of tempered glass and use the same sanpaper you use on the mouse pad for the convex grinds. you can even get fancy and use a little 3M spray adhesive to keep the paper in place. It is much cheaper than a set of good bench stones. Hope this helps

Paul.

Thanks Valcas1... I will give this system a try as soon as I get or make my first Scandi knife. Edge trailing all the time, right? Otherwhise I guess I would end up cutting the sandpaper...

I bet it even gives you better results because I guess that bench stones (water japaneese ones I mean) wear out with use and get somewhat concave.

Mikel

Mikel,

I agree with you on the benefit of the glass and sandpaper. No concave, when the paper wears out you just remove it and stick on another one. I actually have a few tempered glass shelves that I use with different grit on either side, so you just flip the glass over and continue with the next finest grit. Cheap and it works!

if you find a nice piece if glass with a straight polished edge you can use that to maintain a razor edge, similar to using a ceramic sharpener.

Im not considering the RAT3 any longer. Before buying the RC-3 I'd like to find out what the kabar/Becker line will be...anybody know what's to come from them?
