Should I join the cult OR.....

I have mainly Peanuts in my collection, most of the other patterns are due to SHC specials. At last count I have around 140 peanuts and perhaps 8 tiny toothpicks. When I worked I carried a Kershaw random task to open gasket kits and scrape old gaskets off. I look at a peanut more as a dress knife.

Wow!! 140 'nuts- would love to see what that many look like in one location, and what some of your favourites are.

I have one peanut and one SBJ, and favor the SBJ by a lot. However the peanut was my good luck charm in my first University career, was my first eBay purchase for myself, was my first purchased new slipjoint, and my first dress up folder (Bear MGC in Damascus and mother of pearl). With the history behind it I won't be getting rid of it, even if it rarely sees pocket time.

Good luck following your job acquisition, and hope the peanut is everything you are looking for, like others said its hard to go wrong with either choice if you know what you are getting into!

I admit I do not own a peanut nor a swayback jack...and I admit that, if a certain forumite named Carl hadn't been a member of this subforum, I might think differently...but yes, you should join the club...and I'm glad you're doing so.
Yes, this is a great subforum but, you can contribute to make it even better if, after getting your knife and using it a bit, you will post pictures and tell us about your impressions. :)

Great choice on the Peanut.I've been carrying mine daily for 11 months. It won't let another knife get near my pocket, little beast!:D

Great choice on the peanut. I think you'll be happy with it. I think being a one knife guy is a humble experience even if it isn't forever. Congrats on your job as well. I'm still in school so money is pretty tight for me as well. If I get anything new it's because I got rid of the old :)

Chestnut Bone SBJ no doubt about it! It's a
great little knife, It will handle anything you throw at it!

The Swayback Jack is probably THE best made/finished CASE knife, other models are unlikely to be as good. I prefer it over the Peanut because it is wider and is more unusual looking. I like the Wharncliffe master, but, not all people favour this blade.

I'm in the wilderness minority of much preferring the CASE Pen Knife in yellow delrin to the Peanut. This knife is single spring and longer than the Peanut, 2 credible blades nice in the pocket. Carbon or stainless. Of course, if your job improves etc you might be tempted by other seductive smaller knives. The siren call of GEC 25 one or two blades and many choices of blade, 33 Conductor or 68 white Owl both superb single-springs, will be impossible to resist  But, that's another chapter in another book:D

Good luck! Will

I've never seen or even heard of a situation where a SBJ wasn't small enough, but I've seen lots of situations where the peanut wasn't big enough (sorry Carl, my 2¢).

Between those two, I'd go with the SBJ. You might want to look at the little Queen #2 jack in D2 as well.

Very well said.

I'd love to see a picture of this knife!

I'll see if I can't snap a shot of it tonight. Never really took a lot of pics of my knives so it may be underwhelming. lol.

I remember seeing a pic of one that had never been carried in the thread of trappers, man mine ~used~ to look like that but no more.

Snapped a pic of it at lunch on a little pocket organizer my GF got for me on my last birthday.

This is pretty much what it looks like after just shy of 6 years of every day carrying. Funny that I never really noticed it turning from light tan and dark brown to a greenish shade with smudges of the brown left in the divets on the bone. Still remember the pits on the blades from taking on a summer hike before the patina was strong enough. Sure have covered some miles with this little guy.

Thanks for asking about it.

The thanks is mine. I loved how you first described it, and really appreciate your taking the time to follow through with the picture. The bone looks great, and I especially like the patina.

There's nothing like a truly pocket-worn knife.

Thanks!

It was my pleasure. I see so many absolutely beautiful knives on this site it was a surprise that someone asked for a pic of my humble edc. I really like it and will probably be carrying it fairly regularly as long as it and I are around. Wonder what we'll look like in another 5 years? :p

Just an Update.

My plan was to purchase the Yeller CV Peanut when I started my new job....well I just got a call yesterday and my job offer was withdrawn.

So I'll have to postpone my induction into the cult for the time being and enjoy what I currently have.

Just wanted to update everyone in case you are wondering.

Sorry to hear of this man. It is tough out there and so many good folks are hanging on by a thread. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you and you keep your head up. Nothing, not even hard times, last forever.

Will

That´s sad to hear... I´m sorry! I wish I would have been as you would have liked it. I´m sure it will get better... hard times never last forever.

Kind regards
Andi

With all due respect to the peanut crowd, I carried one for a while and could never adjust to the small size. I think it would be a mistake to spend money on a tiny knife just because the purchase would be a romantic-sounding ending to a tough spot in your life. Sure, you can make the peanut work for you, as so many people have pointed out, but since money will still be tight for a while when anew job shows up, why not start with the SBJ since it is big enough to do the job comfortably?

Good luck getting another job offer. Being out of work can be tough.

Sorry man. Hang in there and know it will get better. The knives will still be around.

I carry the SBJ almost every day, I own a few different traditional knives but the SBJ finds the most pocket time..... granted I have yet to join the cult but its next on my list.

additionally I am sorry to hear about the withdraw, Dont know if your a praying man but i will send up a prayer for you and yours.

Thanks everyone for the kind words and prayers.

I appreciate all the support. Such nice people here on the traditional side of the forum.

I was feeling down for a day but all in all I'm good. I still have my family, food on the table, and a roof over my head and my few knives. Which is a lot more than I REALLY need.
My old boss took me back in and I still got a job (which I can put my knives to work at) so I'm happy.

I'll keep on the hunt for another job and my quest for my next knife.
