Should I keep a '97 Taurus wagon or '99 Explorer?

Sell the Taurus. While the transmission is getting rebuilt, spend 700 bucks, get stuff done to your engine, that will make the Explorer run longer, new platnum plugs, clean out the fuel injection system, oxy sensor, and what ever else. Treat it as a home renovation.

Sell them both and put the money towards something more suited to the modern real world. Putting money in the Explorer with that kind of milage is the start of a loosing proposition. It's too near the end of it's projected service life to bother with. Besides, with gas going to over 4 dollars a gallon, it will be expencive to run.

Just an update. Both dang vehicles are still sitting in my driveway 2 months later. Time to fish or cut bait.

If your insurance will "take care of the windshield," then your deductible it way too low ! Raise it to at least $500 and enjoy your lower insurance payments.

I already have a high deductible. In my state, there is a regulation barring insurers from charging a deductible for windshield replacement. I guess the public policy is to promote the quick replacement of windshields for safety reasons. Who knows.
