Should I let this bother me?

:confused:Been waiting a while to get this G10 BG-42, 110.
It looks like a nail was smacked into the bolster/scale seam.

If it's a user, it wouldn't bother me. If I was side it aside as part of my collection, it would definitely bother me and I would send it back.

I bought it as part of a collection. This is the only Custom shop Buck I've owned. I can't afford to buy more for users, gifts and keepers, etc. I'm a totally disabled vet and have to live on my VA comp.

What rdg and Tony said. Joe will look after you. Don't think that you are too picky, I would send it back too.

To the OP,

I have the exact same ding on mine. It is even in the same location. I wasn't sure if this would be a user for me when I ordered it, but it became one. Contact Buck since this is for your collection.

Definitely contact Joe. If two of you have the exact same ding, they have a manufacturing problem and a quality control problem that needs to be corrected.

You should be aware that the bolster is part of the liner, and I doubt if Buck repairs them. It would likely be replaced, and since that requires a complete teardown and rebuild, Buck would probably send you back a replacement knife, which may not have the blade steel you have now.

If you contact Joe, and you want the same steel (or even the same blade), make sure you explain that to him. Put a copy of the conversation/email with the knife, address it directly to Joe at BKI, insure it, and don't put any writing on the outside of the package indicating what's inside.

Leroy Remer can also replace that bolster/liner for you. He may even be able to repair [braze] it for you.

Good luck!

Just sent it back, attn Joe Houser. I asked if he would please look a replacement over before sending it back to me. Also that I want the BG-42 steel.
I've e-mailed him, but he hasn't responded yet. He must be a busy guy.

AR at last check there were still some of them left.
and most likely you will get a same same replace ment
would not worry if it were me
but to be sure call buck and ext 180 to be sure he can hold one for you!
BTW: thanks guy.

AR,
I just got your email this morning and I took a look at the picture. You should send that one back. Thats an odd defect and one I have seen on a couple of these knives. I need to make our engineers aware of this. It is possible that there is something that needs to be corrected in the sintering die.
Send it to me and I will make sure you get the same exact model, steel and all, back. Minus the pit in the bolsters of course. :)

Wow, that's what you call customer service!! That's why I buy Buck.
Thanks, Joe, I appreciate it.

Jeff

I wouldn't send it back even it was for a collection. At that price point that minor defect doesn't bother me, however loose locks, off center blades, blade play, wobble, lousy tolerances and other stuff that you would expect on a current production Pakistani knifes would piss me off.

good man JOE !;)

Sadly, I was carrying my original one - in my back pocket, alone, so it'd stay pristine. I goofed and put it in my front pocket later in the day... along with an S30V Spydie Native, keys, etc. The S30V spine of that Native did the deed. By days in, it had grown some character 'lines' on it's nickel-silver bolsters... and now is a true 'user'! Can you believe that? I have a 110 - with Micarta/G10 scales, nickel-silver bolsters, and, big WOW for use and bragging rights, a BG-42 blade! I am indeed fortunate. And... that second one is on display at home. Life is good.

They are a great value. Thanks, Buck Knives!

You betcha Stainz...life is good.
I was fortunate 'nuff to pick up two of these 110NS BG-42 G-10 knives as well.

And, I am glad I did. If I had just ordered one I may have received the one with the crater in it and been totally bummed. Look at the pic...same spot as AR's...and the mating of the scales to the bolster :(

But, this one is my user...got a OAB on it and today it is in Jack's pocket sheath. The other one is in my time capsule for some wierd OCD reason.

BTW, Five-0 Michael and Stainz...see if ya can get Jack to make ya one of those pocket pool sheaths. Keeps the knife protected from scratching and rides nice in the pocket.

Actually, most just polished away with Semichrome. This makes up for the less than perfect 850 Bravo. Naw, I am still aggravated with that thing. I even, gasp, ordered a pair of Kershaws Sunday!!

Buckaholic - what is an 'OAB'??
