Should I open the package?

I got this knife, a 104OT, through BIN on the bay. It was relatively inexpensive. I don't plan on ever using it, but I would like to be able to hold/fondle it (to me, that is one of the most fulfilling activities a knife collector can partake in). That said, I have three questions
1. Will the value of the knife (in, say, 20 years) be significantly compromised by opening it?

2. I've often heard that some plastic packaging can stain certain coins - is there any danger of this plastic packaging causing any discoloration to the blades over time?

3. What would you do - open it, or leave it alone?

Thanks!

Oh NO What Have I started . Just had a cold sweat at the thought of the whole forum ripping into their Virgin knives with sweaty hands and all . Boxes ripped open paperwork straight over the shoulder . It was only one 144UH ,I'll put it back in its box . Honest.
I have worried about moisture build up . You can always buy a second hand one off peebay hold it under the table and feel it while looking at your clam pack.
Or just go and have a

You have shaken my whole belief system to the core! I had found my way, but now... wait... Daddy - I see God!!!

I'm afraid you have all completely flipped!
Love this place.

I'm not sure what Jamo's post actually said. The "roo with the broo" blew what little was left of my mind. If it were me, I would discretely open it and fondle the snot out of it.

I was going to say Great Minds Think Alike

Then I remembered yours is a two blader in that clampack, although you may have sliced that plastic by now. :D
Also, I have seen 15 year old "Sharp Idea" clampacks and the knives in them still look shiny as new so far.

Shown below is one violated clampack and one that is still a virgin:

To violate a clampack, if the knife needs to be handled or photographed, make a small slit on the very bottom (not the back). The sheepsfoot blade is recommended for this procedure. There you can still remove the knife and the paperwork if necessary. Then, after fingering the knife, you can still sneak it back in.

This still makes the violated package ANIC (almost new in clampack). Many Schrades are sold NIB, when in fact, the end flaps on the box are almost completely worn out by similar tactics. I think this may help urge that knife out of Pygmalions clam. Any bets?

For the record (and if anyone cares), I hate this packaging.
I affectionately call it "cut me plastic".
If you've ever been sliced by one you understand what I mean.

Give me a cardboard box any day.

Tricks of the trade: for the cardboard box dilemma. Get a small pen knife, slide the blade behind the end flap, press the blunt side of the blade against the flap that inserts into the box. This frees the side flap from the little incision designed to hold the end flap closed. Do this on both sides and you open the end flap without any of the telltale damage normally caused by simply putting your thumb into the end and pulling the flap open.

Hard to write out, easier to show.

No crap Greg. Bids on Ebay reflect this too. I think knives with no box often outsell these, because the common man fears this packaging. Slipjoints can fly out of control when trying to get a kids Christmas present open. Shears are recommended for freeing objects from clampack plastic.

This would make a nice YOUTUBE video. LOL

I am sorry and hope I haven't started a clam pack ripping open epedemic .
You know you want to open it ,looks like you all have the ok ,but I don't see a delicate opening operation after years of loyal storage I see a extra large set of thawks Christmas Shears chomping through a box full.
I nearly spat my coffee all over the screen this morning . You are certainly the most humourous group on the whole BF forum .
There is such a wealth of knowledge and sharing here for Schrade collectors all I can offer is a few pictures and some stupid jokes or a vacant jesters position that I have applied for with as much politically incorrectness as I can .
Sorry Bridgeman this is where it started http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=584441&page=83

Were you prone to peer pressure as a child? My tutorial was to provide a subtle means to carefully extracting a 104OT from the clampack, preserving the pristine look of the packaging. I clearly see the work of some type of scissors or shears here. So much for that lesson. :o

Thawk - it wasn't so much that your lesson went unheeded as it was I decided to go a different route. The method to my apparent madness is this - I will keep my eye open for a 104OT in unopened clampack, and purchase another one since they are so cheap. Maybe I am a but "touched" by the OCD fairy, but, to me, the clampack is compromised whether done my way or yours, and I would hesitate to purchase a discretely opened clampack for myself, even if it was totally disclosed to me in the first place. YMMV!

I only had a 4 lettered word response for that when I scrolled down .
Look out i'll round up UL and come over for a beer . And would love to .
Brought tears to my eyes I laughed so hard .

Someone once told me leaving the knife in that position will damage the spring. I don't know if thats true or not. All three of mine are still in the clam pack maybe because I'm afraid to open them.
