Should I return my RAT-5?

I smoothed out the rough finish on it. (just out of boredom.) Anyway, as I got it smooth, I noticed on the tip there seems to be some manufacture defects in the blade. I didn't take a picture, I don't think it would show up. It's not a big deal, but maybe .5" from the tip theres a grove that runs spine to grind. It's barely noticable at all and it's not like it's deep or anything. It just concerns me being on the tip like that. Part of me just wants to keep it and ignore it. The other part of me knows it will drive me crazy and I'll constantly be questioning it's integrity. I don't know much about Ontario's returns policy, but this blade has barely been used and it's clearly a manufacturer defect.

Keep it and quit worrying about petty defects

or

Return it and get what you paid for

the rat-3 that i used to have, came with a really bad grind and was a little off on the tip as well....:thumbdn: as much as i liked the design of the knife, i didn't care for it much... probably due to the defects.. i hate when that happens...:grumpy:

Ontario's QC has been a bit bad at times. Some of mine have really sloppy grinds. If it is just cosmetic, I wouldn't worry too much. Word is they just invested in some new machinery. Maybe they will improve. I'm not buying any more from them unless they drop their law suit against Jeff Randall.

I don't know anything about that law suit. Details? or link

you could return it but I seriuosly doubt you'd get full refund,if it is cosmetic do like HD suggested....but as HD mentioned,Until lawsuit is dropped I am staying away from all Ontario products.

got to the RAT Cutley forum in the Manufacturers section. You can't miss it. There are several threads.

I am not buying any more from them either. Not until this blows over.

Not looking for a refund, just another one.

I have a stupid question. Or I guess it's more a statement that I need to know if it's correct.

Ontario makes knives based on the Randal adventure design. Correct? If that's correct then I could get a RAT-5 from RAT?
sorry, I just don't know jack.

Only Ontario is manufacturing that currently to my knowledge.

I would recommend selling it and buying the RC6 or RC4 when it comes out. Fit and finish of the RC products are top notch by all accounts.

Loads of manufactures hide some pretty shoddy tool marks under a thick layer of drain paint or by giving skim satin finish over the top. It's amazing what wet-n-dry can reveal. I'm not bothered provided it isn't a defect, it just means more work to rub it out. That said, it does amuse me when manufacturers manage to spin the drain paint cover up into a cult feature though, by offering it different colours. [“A finger of fudge is just enough to give your kids a treat...blah blah..it's very small and neat” - Cadbury – advert – value for money – emperor's new clothes].

I had a fairly hideous tool mark near the tip of a Cold Steel Master Hunter. Annoying, but it rubbed out with wet-n-dry and the whole blade polished up very brightly. As far as I know that knife is still living a happy life.

I'd have to regrind the blade to get this out.

Without seeing it, I can't tell, but it sounds like a typical Ontario. If you really want to see some ugly, strip the finish off some of the Busses, but at least their grinds are good. They leave the unground part pretty rough, but the paint covers it. It doesn't affect the performance much anyway. Good luck.

Hello, I purchased a RAT-5 at a gun show a few months back. It’s not been used yet, but I have used some 1500 grit sand paper to smooth the finish out some on the blade. Once it was smoothed I noticed a defect on the tip of the blade. It’s a hollow grind that runs spine to bevel approximately .5 inches from the tip. It’s not a huge deal, but it is a place that could cause it to fail. Preferably I’d like to exchange it for the exact same thing. Thanks for your time.

Jack, I've stripped alot of black and gray coated blades. The grinds on just about all of them were as you described. Companies that coat the blades do not highly finish the grinds because they are going to coat them anyway. Whenever I stripped a blade, I had to do a regrind to smooth it out.
