Should I return this knife?

My CalyJr. ZDP just came in today, I read a lot of reviews saying how great the knife is so I couldn't wait for this to arrive. Once I opened the package this is what I discovered the very first thing

The blade has A LOT of play and it's side touching the handle when it's closed, and actually scraping the handle if any horizontal movement was placed on the blade. Should I return it to lighthound or should I swallow it and accept this is what to expect from a lower end Spyderco?

I really love the knife though as this is pretty much the "perfect" knife I want, the design, the overall size, the blade material and the thickness, the light weight and compactness.

Did you try tightening the pivot at all? That would be a good first step, if you can't get rid of play that way I would return it.

There is no such thing as a lower-end Spyderco :)

Contact Lighthound immediately and work out a return. These things happen but it's not the buyer who should be eating it and Spyderco is good about covering problems like this. Go through the seller first, though.

Return it. You can tighten it up, but I'll betcha it won't stay that way. It's brand new and you deserve better at that price. Per the spyderco video somebody at the factory should have checked this before it left. The video shows ladies opening and closing knives for final inspection.

I'd send it to the dealer and get a new one. Spyderco may just "repair it" and my experience in a similar situation was the "repaired" knife was loose in a few weeks. Plus, if it's repaired, you don't have a new perfect knife, but a repaired new knife. Ask them to refund the return shipping cost too.

I would also suggest contacting whomever you purchased that from, and see about sending it back.

I contacted Josh at lighthound and he says I can return it to him for a replacement, he seems like an up front guy to deal with, we will see how it turns out. I also wonder, doesn't spyderco has some sort of QC for their product? My para also has an offer centered blade like that, but not as excessive of scraping the handle so I accepted it as normal. In fact the only 2 centered blades I have from spyderco are ladybug and native3, all others have some sort of off center blade, in various level.

You should repost this thread in the Spyderco Forum. I'm sure Sal would like to see it. I'd return it for sure.

For that, I have no clue, I barely inspect the knife anymore and put it back into the box, once I found out that the blade isn't up to the standard :(

I don't think it's a second.

I'm pretty sure Spyderco marks seconds by grinding a small notch on the spine of the blade.

Good to know. Thought it might be a possibility. I have some CS seconds that are stamped with a #2.

After you send it back, I wouldn't even bother getting another Calypso Jr. It seems the majority of them have a problem. I would just pick another model. Say, the Delica or Centofante III or something.

Spyderco seconds are marked with a small blade notch. If that were mine, I would contact the seller and try to return it. It's certainly not typical of the Spydercos that I have or have heard about. Even the "entry-level" Spydercos that I have reflect a very high level of QC.

Ive got a calyso III in zdp with carbon scales and its perfect in every way. blades perfectly centered.. no bladeplay whatsoever and deadly sharp.
my delica wave is the same.. absolutely spot on and I would not expect to see your amount of offset and play in any spiderco.
Definately send it back.

Yep, send it back and Spyderco will make things right.

I once had a Calypso Jr and it was perfectly centered.
I also sometimes regret trading it away.
