Should I send my AFCK back to BM?

It's about 7 or 8 years old, I've replaced several flathead screws roundhead machine screws, the back spacer near the rear of the knife I had to rebuild makin' my own individual spacers for each screw.

Now none of that bothers me because they didn't affect the safe operation of the knife, the only other thing wrong is that the liner lock doesn't hold.

If you grab the knife in both hands and try to close it you can see that the lock begins to slide across the tang till the blade closes, this in it t stop me from lite use but I'm afraid to put my faith in the safety of use,

This knife was my EDC for 5 years I'd carry it again but should I risk sendin' it back to BM, should I expect an honored warranty or would it be worth it to spend $50, (just an arbitrary $ amount) to get back a great EDC or, should I retire it and only bring it out for lite duty chores?

I put this here because I don't want biased answers from Bench Made groupies who swear BM can do no wrong, (is there still a BM forum?) to a General forum where I'll get more diverse opinions.

If you send it in to BM, I suspect they'd warranty it in some form. What that means though is up for discussion. I doubt they have parts for it. I doubt they'd make parts for it. I doubt your knife can be tweaked for satisfactory and safe performance.

So I think they'll try to replace it with something in their current line. But you won't get full value for it.

If it's emotional significance is great, keep it. If not so much, then send it in and see what they can do for it.

You might be better off sending to Chax Knives or STR and having them craft you a new liner that works right.

I think maybe send it to STR for a new liner or maybe one of his framelocks? Isnt the AFCK discontinued? If so phone them to find out first if they even have some parts?

I might be what you consider a "Benchmade groupie," but I'd say it might be worth your while to just give Benchmade's warranty department a phone call and see what they say after you tell them about the knife. They might request for you to send it in before they can make final judgement, but at least you'd have a better feeling for what Benchmade would do before you sent it in.

My concern is that I don't lose it, I sent a knife back to Spyderco and they kept it because of safety issues and liability in returnin' a faulty knife, they made good and gave me 3 other knives I picked to replace it but I was bummed because they kept and destroyed the one with the memories.

I eventually replaced it but it's not the first one I had.

Spyderco CS is one of the best but if BM does the same thing I'll keep the knife instead.

I guess I'll just have to call BM CS and ask them.

I can't say that this happens in every scenario, but I did see one instance where a person sent an older AFCK model into Benchmade for some sharpening I believe. BM accidentally scratched the G10 and sent the knife back to the customer with a credit to replace the knife with something else of their choice. So I don't believe that they will keep the knife if they can't service it, but I would say it is worth the phone call if you're considering sending it in.

I'd say go ahead and call/email with a detailed description and see what they say. If it sounds workable, go ahead and send it in. If not, try one of the modders mentioned in this thread. I would hate to lose one of my cherished knives, you can't buy the memories invoked by the sight and feel or one of your own personal, well-used knives.

Hey, maybe if you ask really nicely they'll convert it to an axis lock for you. :D
