I treat all my leather sheaths. I use Obenauf's LP. It darkens the leather and makes it soft and supple. Smells great too! Another plus is if you get it soaked in there really good, it can get on the blade when it gets warm and help keep the rust away. I know some of the folks on here use a beeswax method. Most of the beeswaxed sheaths I've seen have been scandi style pouch sheaths. I've never used wax but I think makes the sheath pretty stiff. I'd say go for it!
I have had a couple of those JRE sheaths, and trated one with linseed oil, and left the other untreated. They both held up fine, the treated a bit better.
I have one n the way from JRE, and I dont plan on treating it, for what its worth....
I hot waxed a leather knife sheath, and axe guard last week.
I just melted candle wax inside a metal coffee can, rubbed on the leather w/ an old toothbrush, and let it sit for a day. Then I used a hair dryer to melt the excess wax, and rubbed it in while wiping away the extra bits.
I wanted to try it out, and had these two cheap leather items to test on. I found it rather labor intensive though for a simple project.
I 've never treated a store bought sheath... I'm dabbling in making really ugly leather things.. and I've been wax treating them.. they hold up nicely as well
I like to use a few coats of neatsfoot oil on sheaths, after water-shaping them. It darkens them (a bit, not as much as a dye would) and stiffens them up.
