Should I use'm or not ?

I always carry a Sebenza when I'm in the woods; it's the folder I trust the most. Losing it would be a bummer, though, so I have a detachable lanyard system with a carabiner that clips onto my belt. That way, I know the Sebbie will be there when I need it.

I would leave the sebie at home for safe keeping, and take the becker, and the benchmade!!!!

not too long ago i took a benchmade 721, plain edge on a "deep woods" camping trip and it performed "flawlessly" :D

I just don't understand purchasing a high performance knife and then leaving it home 'cause you're scared to lose it.
Especially if it is on any sort of outdoor trip where your survival (at the most) and comfort (at the least) depend on it.

I agree. Way back when I was into the firearms scene, I had friends who would buy the most incredibly beautiful and disirable pieces. When I would ask them if they were bringing it to the range, so we could try it out, they'd look at me as it I were from another planet and say, something to the effect, "Oh, God no. I'm not going to shoot it!" Then they'd put it back in the gun safe until the next time we would take it out and admire it and wonder what it would feel like with a bullet coming out the barrel. Whatever floats your boat. ;-)

John in Boise, never owned a gun I didn't shoot or a knife I didn't use.

I am surprised nobody has recommended to the guy a Ron Hood or Tom Brown course or their videos. As well, the Spetsnatz Spade or Tom Brown Tracker would be perfect for the situation. Anything from Busse or TOPS. At least, carry something like a Spetsnatz Shovel or Cold Steel Bushman if things are cost prohibitive. How about a good machete? Smatchet by Boker? Cold Steel sells pretty cheap edged implements you can afford to lose in your sojourn. So much variety - so little time. Just my 2 cents. :)

You will never know what a great knife it is if you never use it, so i say the time is right, bring it with you and use it! BTW have a great time and don't worry about any scratches on you Sebbie, i agree with Gus and my Large Classic Sebbie has a heck of a lot of charter.

Built like a tank and cuts like a dream!

Cheers!

I'm very guilty of owning great knives that never leave the draw at home and my Benchmade's and MOD's look great whilst the Endura always slips into my pockets for general cutting tasks. It's all such a waste...just ask my wife!
Heading into the woods you can't go past a Ka Bar, Cold Steel SRK etc cause they'll last and last and you don't have to worry about prohibitive replacement costs. As for the folder, the endura weighs next to nothing and will always be a good back up for the Sebbie...which is just crying out to be used as it was designed for....all very easy for me to say cause I don't own one..but if I did .........

Bart,

regarding woods in Germany you should have a look to an atlas. You will see that there are some more woodlands in GE, for example Harz, Westerwald, Spessart, Rhön, Bayrischer Wald and others. Estimated 30% of Germanys surface is woodland, nevertheless with lots of villages, cities and streets between.

For heaven leave your gun and all rounds at home! Hunting without permission is called "wildern" and prosecuted without mercy. As hunters have to pay lots of money for their hobby, they have no sympathy for anyone hunting their animals down. And you wouldn´t believe how far you hear shooting in the woods. Alike, hunting with traps is strictly forbidden. German gun laws are as restrictive as everywere in Europe, and because of terrorism German Police is very nervous.

If other guys of your party carry weapons or do illegal hunting, leave the party at once! Old proverb says: "Mitgegangen - mitgefangen - mitgehangen" (i.e. "You´ll with - you´ll be caught with - you´ll hang with"). This proverb works on German courts as well. And in a high populated country like Germany (or Belgium) it is difficult to hide a crime, even in the woods)

Germany has beautiful sights, wonderful woods and lots of buildings worth to see. But our jails don´t belong to that.

Enjoy your trip!

Don't waste your money. Buy a cheap fixed blade (a diving knife will be great) and use it with a multi pourpose pocket knife you won't need more than that and it won't hurt you each time you scrach the blade. Another "astonishing" observation you'll make is that the performance of a not so good blade is not that different from the best blade on the market. Admit that you're a collector and that the knives you own are collecting items so you should save them also because their value will certainly increase within several years.
Lets face it we are collectors and our knives' value is the product of an economy based on the consumer. The technology, materials and design are mainly marketing.

I'll chime in with my two cents. For me, there are two kinds of knives: collectibles (which you never use), and users (which you use whenever they're the best tool for the intended purpose). Whenever you buy a new knife, you have to decide which category it falls into.

If you've decided the Sebenza is a user, then by all means bring it along. Part of the fun of owning such a great knife is actually being able to use and enjoy it.

It's kind of like when you buy a new car. In a way, it's almost a relief to get that first dent in the door, because then you can relax a little and just enjoy it.

Thats what gets me about some people. They bitch about people who don't use SOME of their knives. We are knife collectors people!! Collector being a important part. The fact that you can use something you collect is a huge bonus. For those that don't understand the two catogory system mentioned above , Go tell a coin collector to buy you a pack of gum with his 1923 Silver Quarter, or the stamp collector to throw on his 1911 8 cent Mintz, to cover the postage increase. Some items are best kept prestine. My goal is to own every single knife I have ever seen and liked, before I die and I don't plan on using them all. :)

Collector vs. User
The sebbie has a viable position in either catagory.
[I don't own one and I don't despise them.
They are just kind of 'there' in my little knife world.]

For the 100 mile trip in the woods with just water...
I'm bringin the best that I got.
If the sebbie was the best it would come along. If the best was a Carson or a Ralph (I wish), you bet it would come along. Now would I use these knives around the yard?
I'll let you know when I get one;).

Like Danelle, I'd love to hear more about the trip.
Will there be outfitters or guides?
Or would you just use 2 cars (1 at each end) and rough it?
What would you call an outfitter in German?
