Should Leek Lock Open with Speed Safe?

I just received my new Leek1660CKT. When I push the speed safe "button" with my index finger the blade only opens about 3/4 of the way. I have a Chive as well, so I've tried adjusting the pivot screw, which helped a little bit, but can't get it to flip all the way open.

So, question is, am I right in expecting that the Leek will lock open like my Chive?

Thanks.

Yes, it should open all the way. It sounds like you may have a
bad torsion bar. You can call are email Kershaw CS and they will
send you a couple of torsion bars which are easily replaced.
If you're not comfortable doing it yourself send it back with a
letter explaining your problem and they will take care of you.

Welcome to the forums.

Thanks gents.

I've disassembled my Chive on a couple occasions, so I'll request some torsion bars and see if that solves the problems.

No problem. The Chive and Leek have the basic set up
internal wise so it should be a snap for you.

I have had this happen to me several times after disassembling my Leek. The torsion bar is just fine. Another member here had the genius idea of tightening the screws in a specific order to remedy the problem. Of course I can't remember who it was or how it went but if you play around with the handle screws a bit it may help out.

If not, Kershaws CS will definately help you out.

I remember that thread. it was tip to blade or blade to tip I think.

What's worked for me:

Adjust the Pivot Screw after adjusting the the handle screws. If you attempt to do it the other way around, you might end up with too much pressure on the blade, which will cause the problem you're experiencing. I'd loosen the Pivot Screw, then make sure all of the handle screws are tightened down. At this point your blade should move freely. If it does, proceed to adjust the Pivot Screw to your liking. If the blade doesn't move freely, send it back for repair. YMMV. Good luck, and don't forget to let us know what happens.

Thanks all.

I found that same tightening thread when looking through the forum last night. I'm having more success now, it flips all the way open about 50% of the time. Although, not what I'm looking for. My Chive snaps open with a noticeable click each time.

I sent a note to Kershaw CS last night requesting a replacement torsion bar. I'll keep you all posted on how things turn out.

This Leek is new, right? If so, all of my speedsafe knives do that same thing as yours for the first few days. Mine just needed a little time to break in before they would lock up 100% of the time. Just keep flicking it while you wait for the torsion bars. The problem may disappear before they show up.

hmmmm.... interesting -

I have reviewed quite a few Speed-Safe knives and I actually have a collection of Leeks since it's one of my very favorite knives.

ALL of them snap open with authority. So if I ever get one that only opens part of the way - I would consider it faulty.

That is if it's not my incorrect use ....... (I use the Index-Open or "flipper", and hardly ever the thumb-studs)
it's so long since I first started to use the Leek
that I had forgotten some of the earlier problems that people may have encountered -
please see this old thread posted just a few months after the Leek first came out -

I agree completly VT. All of my Speedsafes open with authority as well, but never when I first get them. I have to break them in first to get them to lock up every time.

I think the point UnknownVT is making is that all of his SpeedSafe-equipped knives have opened completely to lock-up every time with a snap right out of the box and should be considered faulty if they don't. No break-in required.

That has also been my experience...using either thumb-stud or flipper.

No offense, but your agreement is contradictory...

Really? Am I the only person that experiences this?

I have owned MANY speedsafe-equiped knives and only a small number of those opened fully 100% of the time JUST AFTER I purchased them. The vast majority needed at least 20 or 30 flicks before they would open fast and hard enough to lockup ALL the time. Once that "break-in period" is finished they all open like lightening and lock up solid. I just assumed that it had something to do with the grease in the torsion bar cavity firming up a little in storage.

No one else has experienced this with any of their Kershaws?

well, the first time I opened my bump I had some difficulty, then I realized there was a lock keeping the blade closed. It has since snapped open with authority every time.

All of mine have opened and locked up fine from the get go.
They do however get smoother and faster as they break in.

I've never had a problem with a single one not locking up on the first (or subsequent) openings...they are a little slower at first, but never failed to lock up 100%...

I received my new torsion bars in the mail yesterday. Put a new one in and my Leek is working much better. Still needs some tweaking, but overall a great improvement.

The Kershaw CS folks were fantastic to work with. When asking for my new torsion bars, I also also asked for a new one for my chive. Both were sent, two of each actually!

Thanks for all the advice.

Now, Happy flipping!!

Oh, don't be a stranger......there's some very fine knives coming out
and you NEED them all!!! ;)
