I would say the M9 in no way competes with a beast like the FBM. The M9 is a sleek, fast, well-balanced bowie. It is NOT, IMHO, a chopper. Sure, you can chop with it, and Vic demonstrated that it is certainly capable of the role, but it is not built like a chopper.
I personally do very little chopping, even with huge bowies, so the balance and speed of the M9 is far more to my liking than a blade heavy wood-demolishing monster. If you want a chopper, get a chopper - if you want a high quality big bowie, an M9 is a nice choice.
