Should you be able to carry a knife on airplanes?

I do think carrying a small knife should be fine. But I also think that if they simply made it easier to "check" one without needing baggage and all those fees (A lot of people fly with just a carry on bag) than I would be happy with that to.

If you want to stop another hijacking from ever happening, just issue everyone a KaBar as they board. TSA is dumb.

No. The "if everyone is armed, no one will dare commit a crime" argument does not work on a cramped plane, especially when most of the passengers are not willing to get up to go after the perp, or stand up to let someone else do it (look up the bystander effect). Not to mention that any criminal with half a brain would want to enter the cockpit discreetly, so that no one takes them down, armed or not.

I think the problem with both of your arguments is the assumption you know what or how anyone thinks.

How exactly is one supposed to discretely enter the cockpit?

I know of at least one crashed plane that would disprove your victim mentality

That's a joke.

99% of people are genuinely worthless poop-pumps and either a) wouldn't lift a finger in a stressful situation like that, or b) wouldn't do anything useful. Giving them all knives won't change that.

Would I like it if I were allowed to carry a knife on a plane? Sure. I'm definitely not going to use it to stab someone or hijack the plane. Can I say the same about, say, the people I take the bus to work with? Hell no!

Hell, take the incident a couple of years back where a man was stabbed to death and subsequently beheaded on a greyhound bus in western Canada. The rest of the passengers ran RIGHT BY the victim as he was being stabbed to get off the bus. The driver, who had a tire iron or something in his hands, and was right beside the fire extinguisher, fire axe, etc. didn't bother doing anything about it either. I'm not saying every person is going to lay down and take it, but if you think most people are going to stand up and defend one another when lives are on the line, I think you're going to be sorely disappointed.

As much as I agree with you I feel contacting Fox News would be as effective as standing on the beach and screaming at the sea.

Do we get to keep the Ka-bar? Is it serrated? I hate serrations. Giving us Ka-bars is a great way to offset the hideous price of flying

Heck Yeah. Seriously, do you recall which forum you're posting on? What other answer would you expect? Instead of a tiny smoking lounge at the remote end of the airport, we should have a knife-fighting training lounge. Heck yeah.

And FYI, not *everyone* is a big furry lap kitty. Just last Thursday I heard a girl screaming -- and not that girly scream, a genuine panic scream -- at a guy to "stop", so I parked my bike in front of a fire hydrant and marched up to them and asked in my best big mean MF voice "MAAM! do you need HELP?" The guy gave me the stink eye, and threw her purse, which he had previously been beating on a retaining wall, into traffic, and stomped off in a cloud of tequila vapor.

I do believe we should be allowed to have knives aboard flights Mr. Russell. Fox may not be the only issue we all know what side of the fence they are on so if they are pushing an agenda its more than likely not their own. I would skip emailing them and email someone one that might actually help uphold the ruling although I can't say I know who that would be. I actually wish they would allow larger folding knives. I at times have flown a lot for work and hate the idea of putting any of my nice knives in checked luggage that some TSA commando is gonna dig through. If they decide they like it you will never see that knife again. I always thought is was weird that you couldn't have knives but could fly with a lighter. A real disturbance could be caused with a lighter.

I assume you're kidding in thinking it would be OK to give everyone a KaBar.

Nope.

Oh, it'll never happen. We're a society of emasculated girly men. And we did it to ourselves. 50 years ago this conversation wouldn't have even been necessary.

I bet you feel pretty smug right now.

I'm done. I'm out of here. Jesus Christ.

Knife, Hell!...I should be able to carry my .45 on a plane...I'm a good-guy, and will only shoot those who need shootin'.

I agree with the former TSA Director. He's held the position that knives should be back allowed on planes for quite some time now.

"I'm done. I'm out of here. Jesus Christ. "

LOL. See? This is what I'm talking about.

20 years ago you could board a plane with a pocket knife and no one even thought twice about it. Most men on a plane already had a knife. And now, you balk at the idea as if it's the most absurd thing youi've ever heard.

We've been emasculated and turned in to left wing dribbling sheep.

I think we should be allowed to conceal carry firearms on planes, as long as the starting and ending locations are reciprocal, aka within the law.

This. The results of the above video have been repeated countless time in psychological tests. Only a VERY small number of individuals will actively try to stop the assailant. Most will either simply observe it or flee. Some will flee to fetch help. But most people have no clue how to handle that sort of situation.
