Shoulder bags for carrying field guides

Why are you still carrying all that junk? Get a iTouch or something like that and a small solar recharger. Scan in what you can't get already in electrons (to include photos). Now you have GPS, maps, reference works, and camera in less than 8 ounces.

Nope, not a chance for two reasons. The first is that sooner or later it's going to get dropped onto something hard, or stepped on, or gotten wet. This isn't an "if" but a "when". Dead tree media generally survives falling off the back of the 6-foot boulder I'm eating lunch on. Electronics don't.

The second reason is I'm something of a Luddite. I don't own a MP3 player, Kindle, laptop, or smart phone. I use a leather and paper organizer, read books on a flight, carry a pocket knife, and generally resist upgrading until I don't have a choice.

This is what i use for maps and papers. It’s a army map case, it can fit a medium sized laptop.

My EDC is a business messenger bag built along the same lines. It's usually made from ballistic nylon and will last about 7 years before the stitching starts to go.

Well how about this one, I use it when I’m not carrying a lot of stuff, it’s somewhat smaller, made from leather, it has a magnet system to keep all of the flaps closed. It’s made by Pierre Cardin:cool:, I bought it at the air port a few years ago, it very sturdy and very simple.

Does saddleback bags are very cool but they are very heavy and bulky for my teats. They are tuff as hell.

I had a Filson Field Bag I sold, regret that sale- was a great bag (besides the obvious high cost :)) and would be well suited for field guides, binos and the like

^ that one is nice, the new wool ones have really caught my eye- be a great fall/winter possibles bag :)

This is the one I have. I carry a couple of field guides, a few knives, 8x32 binoculars, Canon G11 and my ipod and ipad when in town. The straps are nice wide thick leather and the padding is pretty thick on the shoulder strap. I can't remember what I paid for it but it wasn't anywhere near the asking list price.

A small tool bag such as you might see at Lowe's or Home Depot might be a consideration. Lots of places to tuck field tools, binoculars, field guides, and so forth. But they will probably not have a cover flap. I use a large one as my "field case" to work out of where I will have my papers, instruments, knives, bus cards, etc. that I carry with me on jobs away from the office. There are some great suggestions here and I am looking real hard at some of the LL Bean stuff now.

I also sometimes use one of my photographers vests which has lots of pockets and room for field guides and other stuff.
