I planning on buying a coote belt grinder and was wondering how everyone has there set-up. What works and doesn't work. What size motor?
Thanks
Tod

2 hp WEG sealed motor, with a 3 speed pulley. This is the 10 inch wheel with the ceramic platen.

I will get some up tomorrow

Edit: I'm more awake than I thought. Its a 3hp setup on 110v won't stop for anything, I have it going about 4100 sfpm but I may bump it up to 6000 for grinding and take it down to 3000sfpm for stropping.

10" coote with the disc sander attachment, the 10" coote needs to be over the edge of your table unless you cave a hole so that the wheel with belt doesn't catch

I'm just using a 2-3-4" pulley on the motor and a 4-5-6" pulley on the grinder, so i can get pretty slow, and a 1hp baldor TEFC motor. Sure i can bog it down, but i can grind anything i need on it too, and I find my belts last longer since I'm not leaning into it quite as hard

charlieridge, do you find that the ceramic platin makes a big difference? I only hesitate to buy one because then I couldn't use the table, But I don't use it that much anyways.

Edit: does anyone know if I can add the small wheel accessory myself or does Norm have to do it?

I don't have photos, but Justin.Mercier's setup is remarkably similar to mine. I was going to put the motor directly behind the grinder, but ended up switching the direction and putting it to the left of the grinder. I thought this might keep down dust getting on the motor. Not sure if it makes that much difference. I have 220V 2 HP TEFC motor with stepped pulleys.

I forgot to mention that instead of putting my grinder on the edge of the table I put it on a riser block.

Justin... Nice setup you have there :D Just got my Coote all put together last weekend... 10" wheel & ceramic platen liner. Motor is a 1.5 hp Leeson @1725 RPM and 3 speed step pullys....

btw.. the ceramic liner doesn't seem to interfere with the use of the work rest at all...

Thanks guys you have some nice set-ups got me thinking about what I want to do. I've been wondering how do you do hollow grinding on a coote, do you just tilt it back to get to the contact wheel or do you need an attachment.
Thanks

There are two hex head screws you loosen and then you tilt the whole thing back (away) and then grind on the wheel. You grind above the platen for slack belt grinding.

I leave my grinder in the tipped back position and do my flat grinding at an angle, but i'm just weird =D I do my rough flat grinding vertically on the contact wheel

I have been told. I don't have one but a friend of mine put a piece of hardend steel glued on to the back part of the frame so if the belt tracks over it doesn't grind your frame into over time

Its a good Idea but is would take few lifetimes of slips to compromise the machines integrity.
