Show Me The LIGHT!!

Thanks a bunch for all the advice. So many to choose from. Well I went ahead and bought the following:

1.) Palight Survival Black case, white light
2.) Infinity Ultra by Gerber
3.) Lightwave 3000

I am most impressed with the Lightwave 3000. It puts out an insane amount of light for the price, and size. The Infinity is also a bright lite for just 1 LED and 1 AA battery, and the Palight ranks high on the coolness scale, and for function. I have never owned a LED light, but now that I own 3 of them, I have been converted. Thanks again for the help.
Good choices--I haven't tried a Lightwave yet, but I have the other two and they would be extremely useful in a long-term power outage. Better watch out or you'll be spending as much money on flashlights as you do on balis--I fell into that trap a while back.

Thanks for the warning Zen. Now that I have seen the power of these LED's, I can't but wonder about the awesome power of a Surefire.......no, i did not just say that, i don't need one of those, i have enough flashlights as it is. Need to find more balis to buy :D

Buy a SF! Really! Just do it. Get a G2 for under $30. You will not regret it for a minute, I promise you. :)

Good choice of lights for your needs.
I also recommend the Surefire G2. Inexpensive, and bright as all get out for a time when you need blazing penetration (throw). Looking for someone/something at a distance
Downside is the run time. ~ one hour on two 123 batts.
You seldom use this light for more than the purpose of spotting. Then it's on and off within minutes. You have the other lights for navigating to what you spotted with the G2 :)
Upside, batts are ~ 1.50 from Surefire or batterystation.com. Batts shelf life is ten years.

I didn't see anyone post this link - maybe I missed it:

http://flashlightreviews.home.att.net/reviews/reviews_by_mfgrs.htm

It has the most comprehensive list of flashlight reviews that I've run across. Lists by make and/or manufacturer, type of bulb and battery etc., qualities, rates output, battery life, relative size and weight, and includes several charts rating about one hundred models side by side. Also includes average cost and links to dealers with low prices.

Good afternoon everybody. Been hanging around for a couple of weeks now and just haven't posted as far as I can remember. Just went through the same thing a couple of weeks ago up here in the mountains of NC. Standing outside my house at 5:30 in the morning digging a trench to try and stop the flow of water into our basement. We ended up getting about 6 inches of water in our basement in about 20 minutes. Was crazy to watch. Anyway to get back to the topic. If I had to pick one light that would do everything I needed it would be the Surefire A2. A pricey light but it meets almost all of your needs. Super bright for 2 123's. Something like 50 lumens for @ an hour. But it also has 3 led's that will continue to run for many hours after the battery charge is too low to run the main light. I use the led's around the house all the time when I walk the dog, check on the kids at night, etc. I've got the red led's but you can get white and blue also. The main light will easly light up objects 50 yards away and provide some light well out from there. I just got mine and carry it every day now. Sometimes though you need both hands to work and it just will not do the job. I also have the Princeton Aurora and it stays in my jeep so that I have it whenever I need it for the most part. This is the one I used outside digging during the storm. Also it's a reasonable cost. My next light will be a Photon freedom I think. I just want that little backup in my pocket for when my batteries die in the A2 or for times you just need a little light. So if I had to have one and could part with the money (which I did) the A2 is the way to go (would also look at the new L2 though). However I think different lights for different applications is the right way to go so the Princeton Aurora and the Photon would also be close at hand.

For the $$ the Inova X5 or X5T is tough to beat for an LED flood type of light. I guess it'll really suck the juice out of CR123 lithium batteries, too, so it can run quite nicely off the ones that other lights refuse to run on anymore. I have one of these and it's a nice light. My favorite, beyond everything, is the Arc LSL-P I just got, but of course, Arc is no longer, so the market is a little crazy on these right now. I';ve heard lots of good stuff about the Inova T series and Longbow's LED lights, too. Peak Solutions makes really great lights, too. Their AAA is great and you can get the same body as the Arc AAA with Peak's electronics for $14.95 2-day shipped on their closeouts page. The red LED lights are cool, too.
