How do you like that Grohmann? I think i'm going to pick up the #3 'boat knife' for Xmas - can't decide between Stainless or carbon.

Nice axe, I plan on picking up a hatchet/tomahawk for shelter making this winter when i get a few more paychecks.

welcome to the forum, penguin. the grohmann's a good knife, comes with a good edge but i never used on anything harder than food. I really liked the simple sheath too. took a while to get used to the axis of the blade cocked back like it was. I'd like a flat carbon #4.

I have a Gerber Backpaxe, two 14inch Fiskars, a full sized Fiskars, an Estwing Camp Axe, a Wetterlings hatchet, an old (modded) Mastercraft Canadian tire camp axe, A Blackjack Viking Raider and an old Benchmark (tube steeled handle) hatchet which i found rusting in the woods.
Plus a few axe heads without handles- a firemans axe, a chinese double bitted axe and a small 1 1/4 pound hatchet head.

Of all of the axes (with handles) the Gerber Backpaxe is the one i would not recommend.
The quality is ok but the handle is waaaaaay too short.
The 14 inch Fiskars is way more useful and it is the one out of all of them that i use the most.

The short handled pack axe wouldn't be near as good as the fiskars axe. I have half a dozen of the small hand axes/hatchets, but my two best are the SA Wetterling 19" hunters axe and the Fiskars garden axe.

not familiar with that piece. any words?

I don't know much detail, only that it was an older "Homestead" model I picked up for a song on a whim. Glad I did, it takes a great edge (convexed) and tends to roll instead of chip, even after I dinged it into concrete a couple times by accident (I was in a hurry, shame on me). Very good chopping ability for it's size, still I can choke up and shave tinder easily if necessary. That's a Linseed oil finish on the handle.

Favorite axe would have to be the ol' wetterlings.

Then my favorite hatchet is, my moded Trailhawk, nice little piece of work. Sharp as the dickens with a polished edge.

Nice looking work tools you got , wish I got a chance to use them.

Btw, whats the brand of the 2nd hatchet?

Its stamped "Fuller" , with Japan on the other side , I dont know much about it other than Dad bought it a good few year ago , and that its seen a good many years use since .

the trail hawk looks good, but i'm curious how effective a chopper it really is next to other hatchets. i'd like one.

i just returned from a little hatchet hunting at nearby hardware stores. nothin worth my money. i think i'm goin back to the wetterlings. maybe i'll move up to the 15" model.

Hmmm i showed my axes and hatchets (added to my post above) but i guess i'll have to dig out and take pics of the 2 or three machetes i have poked away. Theres also an army Kukhri around here somewhere as well.
All these pics make me want to get some hawks, come to think of it
i think i need a Golok and a few new machetes too!
:D

I was thinking the same thing. I would like to grab one since they would be the lightest and most visually appealing option. But I wonder if you loose a lot of the chopping power with a 'hawk' instead of grabbing a plain ol' hatchet.
