Hey Guys I am about to embark on that wonderful journey known as the hidden tang knife and need a broach or two. I have been saving some scrap for this purpose and I'd like to see what you guys are using or have made.

I'm also interested in manufactured broaches, not something I've seen a lot of. Not something I've spent a lot of time looking for either so if you have one you purchased and are happy with lets see it!

Thanks!

Augus - I use a variety of homemade broaches consisting of old jig saw blades soldered together and shaped. I have versions with 1, 2, and 3 blade-widths, some with the spines ground off so I can fit into a 3/16 hole, some with all the teeth ground off except just the front few rows, some with forward-facing teeth, etc. I've had them for years and they've served me well. I would some day like to get, or make, a proper broach though.

You can see a few of my broaches on the mag strip in the upper right next to the dovetail saw.

Here is my broach. I used a sawzall blade with all but the last few teeth ground off. This is only one blade thick, so it would work better for thinner blades. However I did use it for a 5/32 thick blade.

Peter - your bench/tooling says much about your beautiful knives!

Here are some on mine I posted in another recent ST thread.

Bits are forged from W2 or 1084 drops with split mortised-tang handles in Cherry or Blackwood. Geometry and sharpness make a lot of difference. These are all setup as ripsaw-type teeth with near zero rake. Riding the line between how fast they cut vs how easy they jam.

Excellent examples fellas. Peter I am a fan of your work, your knives stand out and I really like them, keep it up!

Andy man those broaches are fantastic! I am amazed at some of the tools that are made on here. In searching broaches I found a thread from Patrice and the handles he made for his broaches look better than some knives I've seen! I'll link to it when I get home.

Keep them coming. Nick Wheeler if you're out there where did you get the broaches you mentioned in your video? I want to say they were made by John Perry?

Thanks all!

Brock - They are indispensable for carving out the hidden tang slot in a block of wood. Guide holes are first drilled in the block then the opening enlarged to proper size/dimension with the broach and a file or two.

Hope you guys don't mind me reviving an old thread. Didn't see a lot of responses, and thought it was better to post here instead of a new thread.

I've only seen a few posted, and here John Perry mentioned very often in threads several years old. Had been really thinking about one, then decided to make the call to John. Only to find out the number has been disconnected.

Anyone know any other places to get a Broach like Johns, or have a current contact number or email?

Don't have Johns contact info, but I use a Bruce Bump Broach. Works like a champ.

Although a nice broach, and I'm a huge fan of Mr. Bump that one is too big. I've need one for 1/8'' and 3/16''
Uncle Al the knifemaker's pal also makes a handle broach. I've been thinking about broaches, too, as of late.
Looked at those as well, it's on my list. But still need a 1/8'' broach.
