Alright, so currently I am using a 1/4" x 1" by 8" bar of precision ground O1. I usually just wrap a piece of sandpaper around it and use that to get the job done. I was hoping that all of you with much more experience would be willing to share pictures of your sanding blocks. If possible I would prefer pictures as they are worth 1000 words, versus a simple description. I will take a picture of my sanding apparatus later today when I get the chance. I feel that there are better solutions out there and I am curious to see what your great minds have come up with.

Thanks in advance,

Pete

I have 4 that I use all the time for blades.... all the rest in my drawer (and there are probably twice as many as when I did the thread on Lorien's knife  :foot: LMAO) are either used for something really specific, or were random ideas that didn't pan out.

I didn't think when I put together the stuff about how I hand sand that it would get a second look, much less get referenced by folks on the forums--- so I didn't put a ton of effort into it. I guess maybe I should do a revamped thread with some of this sanding stuff in it.

I wish I had more free time in the shop, I'd like to put together a WIP approaching this stuff like somebody just starting out might. For instance, thanks to Mike Quesenberry, Tim Hancock, and Mike Vagnino prodding me a lot about utilizing my 9" disc sander... I finish grind and then can start hand sanding with 800X paper. But back in the day, I did like most guys do---- take a blade to 400 or 600X on the belt grinder.... then start hand sanding with 80X  ;) :D

mostly I use paint stirring sticks cut and split in different sizes.
Some have straight edges, some rounded. I also have beech round dowel for tight curves.
I also use flat pieses of brass.
I don't like them to be to heavy. I want my energy to go in to the sanding, not moving a heavy block of metal up and down.
