I wanted to make a small utility knife with a very tough point. I think I got carried away with the "tough point" idea...

Jens, could you elaborate on the concept for your design shown above? It looks sort of like a sharpened "fifi" hook. Is the intent for it to be used on the wall?

Drew, interesting multi-grind blade there. I have been thinking about that lately on a larger scale. On big blades (10+"), there tends to be two relative impact areas. Near the handle (around the balance point) for heavy chopping and out around the tip when clearing brush and such. I was thinking it would be rather nice to have a thinner primary grind towards the tip to enhance penetration and keep it thicker towards the handle for resisting fracture and to prevent excessive binding. Do you have any interest in making larger blades and do you think you could do a smooth transition in the multiple grinds to prevent a stress riser?

Hey Cliff, would that be something like a HUGE, fixed blade Spyderco Military?

Dogboy: The design is ment to be used when you on the "wall" and say your bag gets tangeled up in a hook. You can used this to cut yourself loos in a drawing mossion. The outsideedge is for cutting very tight ropes were you cant get under it. I don´t climb my self and hav´nt got any body who climb to look at the design so I dont know if it good or bad. But I like the look!!!

It is a neat look. I would have to think about the utility of it. It looks nasty as far as self defense, that's for sure. And for cutting a rope, it looks like it would go through just about any climbing rope like a hot knife through butter. A lot of consideration toward actually having it along a climb is going to depend on the carry system. For alpine or big wall climbs (which I don't do, so I'm just guessing), it would be fine I would think, since space or weight considerations are that THAT big a consideration. For short routes and traditional climbs (which I do), or sport routes, the emphasis is on minimum gear, minimum weight, because it is all unaided. In that situation, something that can be tucked away under the belt of a harness, or in a small pocket (with absolute certainty that it won't either fall out, or protrude to cut said harness or a rope before you want it to) is a must.

Cliff,

I have a more refined sort of multiple grind than the one I tried in this piece and the ones like it, but I'm keeping it under wraps for the time being. I can send you some drawings with the other ones you wanted (no, I haven't forgotten), see what you think. It's different from what you suggest, but we can discuss both. I'll just try to move this to a private format and get my butt in gear with those drawings. I think I'll try your email one more time, too...

-Drew

Outlaw, no more like an RTAK with a differential primary grind.

Drew, got your emails. I'm thinking about them now and I'll drop you a mail shortly.

This may not be my wildest knife ever...It's the wildest one I've made that's truly functional and comfortable to hold!!!
Several sizes have resulted from this one including a neck knife. This one is just under 12"long, 3/16"A2 with a silk over Ti handle.

I won't blast The Outsider's pics here again, but in case you're new enough that you haven't seen it this thread contains pics of the knife, sheath and original sheath blueprint.

The knife's design is mine, except that some critical "heft and balance" issues were worked out by the maker (Harald Moeller in BC, Canada, highly recommended as both maker and collaborator).

In case anyone's suffering the same cognitive dissonance I was, when Jim says blast, he just means that he's not posting them again. At first, I thought he had blasted someone's design, then I find out it's his design....

YOu should do a set of seasonalpics of the Outider. You know, like on a block of ice for winter time, sticking out of a pile of leaves for Fall, in a bed of daisies for summer, and in the spring show it on your back while you fly down the Interstate for the first ride of the season! I dunno. Just felt like posting something, I guess.
