Show off your Puukkos

Scandi knives just seem to be the "original" bushcraft design:D

My meager collection with my more modern versions of the SBT and Fallkniven's H1:

I still have a few I want to try from rageweedforge (a large Leuko is on my short list) and there's a couple of "budget" puukkos from Kellam knives that I want to give a shot as well.

Nice collection Metis...

Once again ROCK6, you have some nice blades...how do you like the H1..I am waiting on my Skookums, but that looks very much like the Skookum..how does it carve wood?

Alot of the Puukko's that you can buy have a slight secondary bevel, has anyone removed this completely...I did, and the cutting only got better. Gene

i was really disappointed that my Karesuando had a secondary bevel. when i first got it it seemed like it was put on as an afterthought. maybe for people unfamiliar with the traditional grind?

but, an afternoon with a set of waterstones took it back down to a full scandi grind without too much problem.

This is my only puukko. I got it from Keith Johnson at Great River Forge a couple years ago. The blade is made from 1080 carbon steel. The handle is curley maple, corian with leather spacers. The leather sheath has a wood insert. The tomahawk in the picture was also made by Keith. He is a great guy to deal with.

Thanks gunknifenut; I'm out of town but will be back for both my son and I to meet up with another forum member this Saturday to do some cutting. I've only used my SBT in my back yard on my (very) small wood pile. I'm very impressed with the handling, attention to detail and design. I'm a little new to the "bushcraft" crowd, but their knife manipulations and diiferent tasks really bring the "bushcraft" and Scandi-knives to their full potential. We plan to do a little shelter construction, whittling, battoning, etc.

The H1 is very similar in size to the SBT, but the blade is almost twice as thick. I was a little shocked at first, but the convex grind is done quite well. This is a REALLY stout Scandi-design. My only issue (and I haven't had a chance to use it much in the past year+) is that it seems a little thick for typical "bushcraft" tasks. The convex grind may prove me wrong, but it's a very thick blade...not something I'm used to in a small ~4" blade.

Wood jewel

I used my new Javenpaa Utility today at work..carving some stringer corners...I love the handling and size...I will say that I plan on removing the secondary bevel grind this week, maybe tonight...It is a great cutter, but my other Javenpaa's that have the full scandi cut much better.

mneedham,

I really like the Woodjewl. I use it mostly for carving but it will do nicely for a bush craft knife. Well made and great value for the money.

Regarding secondary bevels. I've bought Brusletto, Mora and Wood Jewel puukkos so far and the Wood JEwel was the only one that came with one. I removed it promptly as well.

I think (dangerous I know) that NONE of my puukkos have a "scandi edge"- they are either convex or had secondary bevels (but except for the Wood Jewel they were all second hand- they may have been "fixed")

I don't know if it counts as a Puukko, but I just got home from work and found a X-mas present from a forum member...a Charles May Scandi!!!! it is AWESOME...I had no idea they were the size they are, they look pretty small in the pictures here on the forums. Its not huge or anything, but it is a handful of knife that looks like a performer, I plan on using this knife alot...and the fact that a great friend gave it to me is really cool as well. Wait till he opens his present I just mailed out....good stuff. Pics in hand later, Gene

rfbadger,

I have been looking at the Wood Jewel for a while, I also like the Kero Elk knife found at the Northerner (a link from the Puukko Blog). That picture you posted has made me want one even more....
