Show off your traditional knife and Lighter

I’ve always said I needed a zippo just on principle: that whole old-school America thing. Don’t have one yet though, it’s not really a top priority. My dad was a heavy cigarette smoker and used cheapie butane lighters from the drug store. I smoke a pipe and so I use butane more suited to the task. I’ll have to take a photo…

I don't smoke anymore, but love to fiddle with a Zippo, just for the sound of it's distinctive opening and closing...

Zippo sell a butane insert specially for pipe-smokers

I love the idea behind this thread and am surprised one didn't already exist. Kudos to starting it up! It is one I will be able to participate regularly in 😁

I have a very similar zippo! I believe yours predates mine. I'd be curious what yours dates to! I'll have to include my fly fishing zippo in my next post to this thread and tag you in it when that time comes.

I decided to make my first post to this thread a folder I just received this morning from a fellow forum member; my first GEC barlow. And, the zippo is a 1974 that I had in my pocket at the time I started writing this post. I've had this one for quite some time, but find myself usually carrying it over winter after college football is more or less over with.

I haven't been able to find too much information on the hunter and dog zippo or the fly fishing one I have, but my understanding is that they are a part of a "Sports Series" that Zippo manufactured in the past. They all seem to have a similar graphic / art style. I've seen other "non-outdoor sports" in this line with similar graphics such as bowling. But, I've never been able to narrow down what all "sports" were are part of this (supposed?) "Sports Series". Definitely interested in anyone that knows more about these, this series, or if I have everything all mixed up! 😂

Have a great weekend everyone and thanks again for creating this thread!

I am going to have to do some research on it again to get the correct dates as I have now forgotten. I found this lighter in the bottom of my grandfather's tackle box after he passed away, and since he taught me to fly fish it is one that I cherish and carry occasionally. I have the original insert, but I carry it with a butane insert since I don't smoke anything other than an occasional cigar and I like to have a lighter that works when I grab it! Today just happened to be a cigar day, so it was along for the ride in my pocket.

I have not seen a bird hunting cover like the one you posted, but I love that one as well! Looks like I need to do some more research on these to see what they all are.

Beautiful zippo you have there. Thank you for sharing.

ETA: Looks like mine dates to 1968 if I am reading the date code correctly.

Starting sometime in 1958, Zippo started marking their lighters in a way that makes them very easy to date. Pre-1958 (or ones from 1958 that are patent pending) are much tougher to narrow down. I only own one zippo from before 1958 which I'm sure will get posted here at some point. It was much harder to date and involved analyzing fonts, letter alignment, insert changes, hinges, and more. I believe it dates to 1952 but I might be off by a year or two. It is a full steel construction (both case and insert) as brass was needed for the Korean War.

That is such a fantastic story and a great way to remember your grandfather by. My grandfather taught me almost everything I know. And while he fly fished well before I was ever born, I think that was one area where I was showing him a thing or two as I got older 😝 There weren't many things I could compete with regarding my grandfather, but I could sure pull in a trout where he seemed to find none 🤣 I now have his glass rod and old click'n'pawl reel in my possession and am hoping to get the guide wraps fixed so I can take it out. I've already disassembled, cleaned, greased, oiled, and reassembled the reel. I also have his wooden fly net and put a few trout in it my first time out after he had passed.

If you look around, you'll see a few different variations of mine from that vintage era. All of them are great designs, in my opinion! I just happened to like this one best 😁 Thank you very much for your kind words and thank you for sharing your story as well!!

I still take my grandfather's old JC Higgins fiberglass rob and reel out occasionally. I love the slow cast and feel of a fiberglass rod, and even though I do have a more modern fiberglass rod, sometimes the feel of an older one is needed. The rod is about 3" shorter than original now after an unfortunate truck door incident, but after a little epoxy and new tip guide, it still works just fine.
