Show some 500 love

I like the 500, but haven’t gotten a chance to try one yet. Anyone know why they haven’t made it a custom shop model? Seems like it would be a winner.

Buck has offered several limited runs of the 500. Some can be found on the secondary markets. DM

"Plain Jane" without scale pins.
Notice the shade line differentiating the covered from uncovered part of the blade when closed. That tells me it was exposed to something during its history, it does not wipe off. What attacks stainless? I've not seen anything like it.

I wonder if the shade line was caused by buffing with the blade in the closed position. Or, was it pocket carried with coins at one time, prior to a spa treatment? A closeup photo and some background history of the knife might be helpful. Looks really good without scale pins!

I too, have one with same shadow, and truly I think it sat a good while closed and the exposed area just oxidized a little as it was in more open air....stainless will do this, it is just much more resistant to elements for a longer period than the carbon steels...just my unedjamacatered guess!

The exposed area has dulled, the part that was in the handle is still bright. The knife shows no use or carry and came boxed. Chemical vapor in the leather sheath perhaps but I doubt it. I have many sheathed folding knives and none show this although I will say I rarely store knives in the sheath. What throws me is the sharp demarcation. /Roger

A few years back I was interested in getting one but about that time Buck quit making them for a time and all the dealers were sold out. The secondary market was crazy high prices so I put it behind me. I had never had one in hand to know what they were like. Then in a gun shop they had one and I looked at it. It felt solid and heavier than I expected. Then I saw a 112 and held it and it seemed to be about the same weight so decided I would rather have a 112. It’s strange how I thought I would like a 500 Duke but after getting it in hand it, it just didn’t have the same appeal of the 112 to me. Maybe someday the 500 will be appealing to me but for now I prefer the 112 in the 3 inch blade size.

I get your position. given the choice I prefer the 500 mainly as its a better pocket carry in the same size blade though. that alone I prefer it. as for belt sheath carry, I prefer the 112. thicker handle and shape of front bolster wins out.

The first time I went to the Blade Show a BCCI member had a truly incredible large display of 500's. I think he had 99% of ALL factory 500's plus many incredible Customs including one made completely out of wood. David set up his 110's next to him and I spent hours looking at all the 500's. I hope someone will remember his name for His displays showed a real love and dedication to the series..

The slim handle with radius corners of a Duke appeal to me. This classy look & feel sets well with me. Pulling this model out to cut up my lunch apple in the employees break room catches an eye. But its blade length is not enough when working around the farm. DM

Hi guys, love the forum. I am still trying to figure out the photo thing but I have a 500 Duke question. I have a 2013 500 Duke and was comparing it to a friends 500 script/micarta version at lunch today. I could tell from photos that the newer blades are a bit different with regards to grind and belly, but I was surprised that mine was smaller as well. Is it just mine, or was there a change along the way?

What area of the knife is smaller?
Welcome to the Buck forum. DM
Thanks David, I would say that the blade on my 2013 is both shorter and not as tall as my friend’s older micarta version. It in no way affects my knife, I like it a lot. Just curious to the variation. I will try to get a picture of both together.

I've noticed that in pictures, but I've never had an older version so I'm not sure if it's really a thing. I think the proportion of the 500 blade is off and I've never warmed up to it. I love the 501 so I thought the 500 would be even better, but I can't get over the blade to handle ratio. So, if the older versions are different, I think I need to try to find one
