I thought I'd start a separate thread about this one. Nice to have all of them in one place.
As it's been said in another thread, common sense and good safety practices are a must in the shop and the easier they are to implement the better. So I give you some of my automated face shields in the hope it will give you ideas and that other will share how they protect their precious sight in the shop.

On the drillpress. Small and out of the way.

Commercial one on the mill

I've shown the portaband one a few times

This one is not used all the time but when doing a lot of cutting, it helps keep most of your upper body/head from getting covered in razor sharp swarf. And I also like to use it for the things that scare the crap out of me like parting for example. :o

Finally this one is for using the Foredom

What do YOU use?

This :D

Actually these are excellent ideas. I often find myself with a just one hole job or just on cut and no glasses. The temptation to go ahead is strong. My solution has been to hang safety glasses on all my machines. But, then I put them on and walk away with them to the next task. Another thing is I often use an optivisor. Although it does shield my eyes it has a very small profile. I am working on adding a flip down face shield to my optivisor.

Glad you guys like them. The cheap visor is less costly than the kind that is on the mill that's for sure. And when they get scratched, they sell only the shield part even cheaper. I've hanged it close to the saw but they would work just as well higher, closer to your face, as long as they don't get i the way.

Eric. I'll take a few more pics of the foredom setup and post them tonight.

You must be very skilled at making a salad at the salad bar :)

Very cool idea. I made the move to a full face shield and haven't looked back but I may implement something like this on one of my wet grinders to help keep sludge from hitting my face.

Eric, here are a few more pics as requested. This was done so it could be used with the homemade pinvise attachment on my jeweler's bench. I can remove it when not needed. As you can see, there is also a duct for the dust collector underneath. Foredom's rotation coupled with the fact that you often need to have the work close to your face makes it so that you are basically shooting very fine steel (or wood) dust up into your face. Not good, not good at all. I made this so I could work without having to use the Airshield all the time. Like most things I've built, it is far from perfect and I still need to tweak it but it is already something I would not live without.

And yes, I am the king of the salad bar. ;)

Ah, finally a use for that replacement shield that doesn't fit any of my headgear!
Up til the finger mangling last Jan, the only trips to the doctor I'd made were due to stuff in my eye, so I just won't drill or grind without some kind of eye protection.
Hard won wisdom. The thought of not doing it causes great pain in my checkbook.

Finaly got a little free time to work on the SG's face shield. This is where I am at.

Just have to tinker a bit with the bracket to make it so that I can flip it up and out of the way but that should not be too hard.
I also added a shield to another drillpress and the big bandsaw. I am not sure but I think I may be addicted. :o;)

bout as soon as i walk into the shop i jsut goahead and hang my goggles on my face (i also keep many around the shop on different tools ) what ends up happening is i put them up on the top of my hat and forget then pick up a 2nd set to cover my eyes. that or i forget there on my face and go to the PO or store adn look stupid

I have found through my association in industry as well as the knife making thing that some of the "safety" additions become nothing more than get in the way problems. Do you see these type guard things in machine shops and such? I don't think so. What you do see is all operators with proper eye protection for the job being done and as well before this is brought up the proper use of or lack of gloves for the job on hand. Think of the knight of yore all covered in his armour sitting on his wonderful steed. As long as he could stay up there all covered up he was fine but it he fell of his horse he could not get up of the ground without help and was dead meat. Frank

Love your guards Patrice and your equipment looks imaculate, hmmm.. do I sense a little OCD ? :D Thanks for posting the photos.

Frank I've worked in the machine shop industry for 38 yrs. and in Ontario the WSIB and Ministry of Labour are on a mission to make efficient and practical machining methods obsolete. Our shop has spent over $100,000 guarding manual equipment to the point of being inoperable just to comply. What they are doing is taking the word SKILL out of skilled tradsemen. Sorry to detour this thread.

I see this thread already having gone in a direction that is not only dysfunctional but to doing but to a point of causing interference while trying to use the machine. Just my opinions. Frank

Using the machines? Who said anything about that? That would mean getting everything dirty and like Paul said, we just can't have that. ;)

Kidding aside, I am shooting for something that doesn't interfere with the machines Frank and up to now they all work that way except for the surface grinder one which I still have to tweak like I said.
