I have recently gotten the opportunity to work with a lot of pre-ban elephant ivory (a 40inch tusk weighing 30lbs!) and have consequently been thinking about how to use it. I love ivory on a knife; whether plain, carved, scrimmed, I usually think it looks nice. So.. let's see your favorite knife with ivory. We can include mammoth, walrus, warthog, whatever--let's not limit ourselves to elephant. As a start, here is one of my favorites from Dave Lisch (or anywhere else, ever). It's walrus, and I'm sure you'll recognize it:

Sure I recognize it - it's in my display case!

Elephant ivory is a complete deal breaker for me - can't import the stuff. I even try to avoid really white core mammoth because I've had the result in problems as well.

Anyway, I'll contribute some ivory pics when I get home and look forward to seeing what others post up.

I dislike owning knives handled in elephant ivory, but there are exceptions to the rule - and this one is one of the few exceptions, "handled" by a master, 25 years ago:

OOH! Can I play?

It may be outlawed and unstable, but that adds to the seduction. Actual elephant ivory on both of these.

Sexiest lady around:

Look at the center of the nerve from the back, and out through the side.

Thanks Travis!

A sweet little desk knife by Mike McClure. I liked it so much I went home and started one out of some damascus I have laying around.

And finally this little Loveless style city knife by Alain Desaulniers:

These are really getting the creative juices flowing!

Here are two from this past year. The dagger is pre ban Elephant. The RSH is Walrus.

Beautiful ivory pieces showing up here. And how could any ivory thread show up without a large showing from Don Hanson. Great examples of fine ivory knives across the board!!

Here's my favorite of the few ivory handles that I've done. I love the deep blue color of this. :)
