that is slick. ive been thinking so hard about how to make a sturdy/stable base that a wall mount never even came to mind. i dont have the option of using a rafter for hanging support though. did you also tap-con to the wall?

Mike,

Nope. The whole thing hangs by that one bolt through the rafter. I couldn't afford the floor or bench space to surface mount the tooling arm rack. The rafter was the obvious choice for me.

I shared this recently on my Facebook page. The device the liner is clamped to is a little home made clamping jig that has turned out to be really invaluable.

Tony Bose has been telling me to get a 20''. Bur King makes a dedicated 20" wheel machine, but Big $$$$!

I've seen the videos from the knife show. Looks awesome, but you are right. $$$
Silverman also has a Youtube video showing a custom job. His looks very nice as well. One day I may fabricate one.

I could see using that clamping jib for bolster drilling work. Thanks for posting a pic Bob. I need something like that!

Don: I sold a bunch of knives and bought a Burr King 20" machine. About the only thing I do not grind on it are Lanny Clips as I think they need a deeper grind to look correct and easier to stop the grind as in a saber grind. 10 or 14" on all else. I saw a guy grinding on a 1 1/2" wheel. Looked difficult. Cool grind though on a swedge. Cost ya 5k however. !!!!

Could you use longer belts and mount a big wheel on a special long tool arm that mounts the wheel center lower?
That's what Bruce Bump did on his huge wheel. He buys something like 6X132's and splits them. Jess

That isn't a bad idea Nathan. I like it.
I have your 36 inch radius platen and am wondering if it will work well for the hollow on the back of a Yanagi-ba. Something I am dying to try, but am concerned my skills aren't quite there yet.
I'm even considered just using it by hand on the sanding bench.

The 20 inch wheel would settle my how-to quandary.
Anyone have pics of a 20 inch wheel setup?

for me if i was doing a big wheel it woudl have to be at least 36 inch. im the oddball kitchen knife guy tho (also looks nice on bowie knives tho)

Thanks stezann. I'm no carpenter or wood craftsman by any means but if I have a need for something I can usually build an item to get the job done.
