Right on, I like it! I've always been a fan of the older Gerbers, they're great knives. It's cool to hear that you've been EDCing the Ti version for 20 years.![]()
I really like 154CM myself. I've always been able to get a screaming sharp edge on it, and it holds it quite well for me. I don't have personal experience with Gin-1, but do have a real old school G-2 Spyderco Enduro that I like. And 440c has always been one of my favorites of the older steels. Like you said, those steels are more than adequate for the usage that most knife owners put their knives to.I used to have a pretty sizeable collection of vintage Gerber USA knives, but over the years, I ended up giving them away as gifts or selling them off, all of them except the two AirFrames and my slightly dented 1st gen Air Ranger (spiritual ancestor of the Spartan Harsey Talos) for folders, and my set of Pro Guide II fixed blades for the woods.
I'm glad to see that Gerber is making at least some of their knives in the USA, still, but I just don't like their angular designs in the current era.
Before I got the AirFrames, my EDC was a Victorinox SwissChamp and a 1st gen Leatherman Wave with Wave Tool Adapter. Back when I was consulting, it was a rare computer I couldn't disassemble between the two of those, if I didn't have a larger toolkit. I somehow lost the SwissChamp, but I still have the Wave, and it lives in my bicycle tool kit.
Back around the early 2000s, I did some extra consulting work for my former company, which left me temporarily flush with money, so I tracked down the two AirFrames and bought my Benchmades around the same time. They are all such great knives that I've felt no real need to replace them, despite the fact that 154CM steel is no longer considered a premium steel by most people. My Benchmades are GIN-1 (100RR) and 440C (190 & 192)--again, not considered premium anymore, but more than adequate.
Plus the AirFrames are tip-down carry only, which is my preference.
Very nice! What vehicle is that pic from? Looks like a lot of fun![]()
