That is AWESOME! Great work, and I really like the historical aspect of the piece.

Did anyone else notice the board that served as the background for the photos?

Nice. My understadning is that most atrillery shells made from WW2 up until the advent of the modern "prefragmented" Gerry Bull type shells are made from steel that is suitable for forging blades, like 10xx steels. Unlike gun barrels, they want this steel to burst/shatter and make lots of nice sharp little fragments, so they need on that is easy to harden up a bit.

That was a great progress thread. Jumped quite quickly from in progress to done. I would also like to know what type of steel it is. Nice that some one pointed out that old shells would likely be some 10xx steel of some sort. I bet you could find all kinds of that stuff.
