SHTF/Camping gear stacking

I dunno man. Playing the roaming marauder in a collapse doesn't sound too safe. When the food and water in your pack runs out begging/thieving will be the only option available to you. Not to put too fine a point on it but thieving in any kind of collapse scenario will not be looked kindly on. You need a better plan.

Make no mistake. Your food and water will run out. Storing both will get you over most bad times but long term farming is the only way to guarantee enough food on your plate in the modern world. There are just too many people on this planet for anything else to be sustainable.

Short term insurance documents and money is good to pack.

I did not realize this was what you had in mind.
The thread title mentions camping, so I'm thinking "camping."
If a societal collapse occurs, I guess I'd prolly stay home. Thanks for clearing up my mis understand.
I stayed home for the last financial collapse, too.

lol That was pretty funny. Well done.

The thread also mentions SHTF? Also one one ever claimed roving marauder. I mean 5 mags isn't going to get you far in that game. However for self defense its not to bad.

Lots of ways to go here. SHTF is not the same as camping, for sure. Real SHTF puts me in mind of a book recently published called The Dog Stars. Have a read. I loved it. Not a lot of walking around with gear in that interp of SHTF. For camping, I'd leave out anything too heavy. One poster had a Bible in his gear. I'd leave that out. Army field manual? Same. But everyone has his own take on this stuff. Mostly we're just doing it to make ourselves feel prepared. Really being prepared is another story. Get out there and use it and see what works.

Last financial collapse, I didn't even shoot anyone. It's hard to believe, but it's true :-)
Seriously, if I were concerned about some societal collapse type scenario, I wouldn't live too much differently than I do. I'd stay home, on the farm, I think.

Most people who put together 50lb packs for BOB, GHB, INCH whatever the heck you call it have never actually carried 50lbs of gear more then a mile. I am not saying the posters in this thread fit that but many on the web I have seen you can tell by their choice they have never really camped or backpacked. You quickly learned what is necessary. You can do so much with very little.

You need to:
Regulate your body temps
Feed yourself
Hydrate yourself

Fire making becomes very important so tools and skills are more important then stoves that run out of fuel on the 3 day. A tarp or poncho are sufficient for a shelter. Water purification is still very important but boiling water is a good backup.

For hunting and protection I would be happy with a pistol and a small take down bow. No way I want to carry a battle rifle all day long. IS your goal to survive and evade or to make contact and battle?

I believe in traveling light if at all possible. I do keep a pack ("GHB" I suppose) in the car in the hopefully unlikely event that "something" happens while I am at work or on my way home at the time, unable to continue driving as a result. Without driving as an option, my number of routes are less numerous but more direct, and I know them all well enough to be fairly confident that I could get home without issue with only what's in my GHB. I have my concealed carry license, so a handgun and spare mag are part of that. As with my hiking gear, spare clothes and first aid are a definite consideration, which is more a matter of bulk than weight.

For hiking, the distance I plan to cover dictates how much gear I bring and how I carry it. In a SHTF scenario, leaving home would be the last thing on my mind, but if that's what it came to, I still would try to keep the weight down by eliminating anything redundant or non-essential. However, living off the land isn't something I would attempt, so having 50+ pounds of supplies is not part of the game plan. If it's Red Dawn in real life, well, then I might change my mind, but I'm not carrying a rifle and thousands of rounds of ammo in my part of the world, whether for hunting or defense. If that's what's called for, then hopefully I'm with at least another person or two to balance the load.
