SHTF knife sharpening

I would go with a double sided medium/fine bastard file and maybe some sandpaper.

Well....talking from personal experience:

Either a steel file/ XC diamond folding paddles/ 320 grit wet or dry sand paper and a 600grit diamond paddle are the must haves.

1000grit ceramic stone seals the deal.

Been using the setup for 2 months working on site and remote areas in Africa.

Ps. Technique is important and I can get a working edge on a piece of river rock. That's why I prefer free hand sharpening. You know proper technique then.

I have a Smith's 2-sided diamond sharpener that stores inside its own handle. Glued a piece of leather to the outside for stropping. Not fancy, but it works. That, and one of my diamond rods.

Keeping it simple one could just get a Silicon Carbide puck, they are small double sided and light weight and will handle any sharpening needs or repairs needed.

Used to work with a guy; a former saw filer. That guy knew how to get things SHARP, and shared what he knew. His weapons of choice were a 6" bastard file and a decent steel. No stones, no fancy angle holders, no diamond anything; just the sharpest knifes I've ever seen.

His EDC was an old 1930's era grocer's pocket knife. Sort of a long bladed, folding predecessor to a box cutter. Ouch! I cut myself just *thinking* about it.

I carry some cut-to-size strips of 120, 400 and 1200 sandpaper and I also glue them to other items which I usually bring along. 400 is enough though. However, there is always something in the bush which you can use to sharpen your blade.

I am a big fan of the DMT Diasharp cards, they fit in your wallet and get the job done. As with most tools, the most useful sharpener you've got is the one you've got on you.

I really like the tiny ez lapp diamond rod that looks like the top half of a ballpoint pen, the rod fits inside. 600x and half an ounce.
It has been all I needed to touch up axes and knives when out in the field. Has a hook groove and fits anywhere.

In camp I have a spidie double stuff, a small file and wet/dry in 320x, 600x and 1000
