Shutting down my "shop" for a while

After I complete the blades I am working on now, I'll need to shut down the knifemaking operation for a few months. The main thing making this necessary is the need to get the house ready to show it for sale. This means decluttering, which in turn means getting a lot of stuff put into storage before shipping it to the next home. I also need to stop making such a huge mess in the garage, so even things like handle shaping will be out of bounds for me.

So, the next time you see me starting a new knife project thread I will likely have changed my location to Houston. Until then I will still be lurking and posting.

Houston?? You like to hunt?? Great pig hunting down there. Need to go back for a visit.

Did the move the shop thing a few years ago. Told the wife never again. I will only move if we can afford to buy 100acres and put the house and 1800sqf shop right in the middle. Good luck on the sale. Take care and we'll see you around.

I hope this transition goes smoothly for you, don't forget to still drop in here now and then until you get set up again in Texas...
If you feel like you couldn't possibly haul all of your blackwood stash south with you, I would be happy to buy some- just sayin'.

Never good to have to shut down your shop. But the bright side:
When you set up your new shop in Huston you can change all those small and large things that you have in mind when you work in your current shop.

"Houston, We have a problem..." Greg is moving here.

Seriously, have a safe move and get back to making knives as soon as you can.

No joke, Salem... you'll definitely be a recipient of several pounds.

I'm jealous, and no heating bills either. Have a great move and enjoy your new home.

Heating bills are the least of my worries here. Cooling bills in Houston will FAR outstrip my heating bills here... by about 3X or 4X, if memory serves.

I moved here in 2004 because the company needed me here to manage a more junior staff that was responsible for developing the relationship with Microsoft. In 2012 I gave up that job and that team to take on a new challenge. Now my team is geographically disbursed across the east cost and gulf coast... none are here in WA. At the moment I am being considered for a promotion and increase in responsibilities... but only if I move back to Houston. The feeling is that the Houston based staff need a manager that is present... and upper management wants me there to meet with them too.

So I go where the company wants me.

I certainly hope they will be paying you the big bux for being willing to uproot yourself from this fine, fine Northwest we live in...

Oh they treat me well, to be sure. Even so, it is a hard, hard decision. My wife and I both love it here. We were never this content in TX. This place has really mellowed me out. I'm 75% less a jerk now than I was 10 years ago, believe it or not!

Well, things change, and for now my move planning is on hold while I try to sort out my future with this company or my fresh start with another. So last week after the big garage sale (where I sold off a lot of the clutter that was jamming up the garage), I decided to put my "shop" back in working order.

As a sign that things are returning to normal (for now, at any rate), I placed another order with Gilmer Wood yesterday. This time I'll be getting a variety of woods including Bocote, Ziricote, and a few other colorful and attractive types.

Maybe I should give up on knifemaking and just admit I'm a wood collector.

So many reasons...

Bottom line... living in Houston, commuting 35 miles each way each day, and getting no recognition for the work I was doing took it toll on my soul.

Living in the PNW gave me space to breath, time to reflect... and (let's face it) I got older and more prone to doing things in a less jerky manner.

Sounds like you better stay put, I don't think anyone wants to see the reemergence of the 75% more jerky tryppyr LOL
