Guys,

Almost two years ago, I asked Shane Sibert to make me a Premier Grade Scout...with some mods....looks to me to be worth the wait...I LOVE this pattern, it reminds me of a 21st century take on the Army Quartermaster knife.

The specs are below, photos were provided by Shane, himself:

Premiere grade Scout

¼" thick S30V, 6" cutting edge, satin finish flats, belt finish hollow grinds, sharpened top clip

Mosaic pins..a unique approach to this, no?

Black canvas micarta handles

Leather sheath(Lifter's Leather) with diamond sharpener

Comments and questions welcome.

Best Regards,

I'm not that much into tacticals, however this one is obviously "ALL Business".
Seems as it would be indestructible under the extreme conditions for which it's designed to tackle yet stills has some eye catching features such as the hollow mosaic pins and alternating finish patterns on the blade grinds and flats. This is the style of knife micarta was made for IMO.
The sheath is no-nonsense and functional as one that houses this type of knife should be. This piece would be a welcome partner for combat and/or survival situations.:thumbup:

Wow, I like that, too. I was just admiring Shane's work--and specifically one similar to this on the FS forum. Similar, but not quite as deluxe.

I understand your appreciation. Nice.

Nice to see Lifter's work, too. He does it well.

I like it a lot. Which were the mods that you suggested?

Roger

Leather sheath, not standard, but offered.

Mosaic Pins

Longer than standard blade length.

Definitely like the pedigree... I've always toyed with the idea of getting a Quartermaster's knife, but after seeing this one, I'd rather wait and get something custom like yours!

My only concern would be the length of the single guard - from the pics, it appears to me to be of such a length that I would think it might interfere with some chores, but I admit, it's hard to tell without actually coon-fingerin' it... My only other mod to your model would be to include the original "hammer"-style butt: I like the shape of yours, but I've always felt the hammer end of the original was one of it's endearing qualities, as I use my CRK's for that feature (it comes in handy for tent pegs! :D ) All my humble opinions, of course!

Overall, though, I agree that you've got a great package, especially when teamed up with that style sheath! Nice score and nice project! And awesome grinding by Shane - I've always liked the crispness of his lines at the few shows I've had the chance to see his work!

Joe,

I hear what you are saying...but have never been comfortable with hammer butts in use.

They look cool, but so does the way that Shane did this one as well, and think the retention advantage outweighs some loss of utlity with the hammer end.

I went camping/sea kayaking this summer on the Cascade Marine Trail, had a particularly pressing need to get our tent up quick as a fairly soggy front was approaching at a brisk speed. My Spyderco Forester did a decent job on both the flats and spine of the blade, but the best stake setting performance came from man's oldest tool, the rock.

Slamming the butt of a knife into an object for hammering, while a sharp, live blade is on the other end never struck me as a particularly safe endeavor.

Great knife from a great maker, and your particular specs add to it quite nicely. I believe you will enjoy it very much. Congrats.

I like it a lot, except the guard that goes a bit too low IMO. What's the hole in the guard for?
The grinds look top notch and the general shape of the knife has a nice visual balance. All in all a cool knife

I Like the Bling its a nice touch
I have one of Shanes knives I use as a Dive knife...Stout and functional tools with sexappeal

You want comments? Ok, how's this? YOU'RE NOT WORTHY OF SUCH A FINE KNIFE, YA BASTID! :D

That IS a great looking knife, as we discussed on the phone today, Mr. G.
Congrats, on a nice pickup.

Nice score sir! it manages to look very burly without straying into the clunky "sharpened prybar" or "high speed, low drag" categories. A very nice and thoroughly modern interpretation of an old school miltary field knife. Good to know that there are guys out there who can do that well. Kudos to both you and Mr. Sibert:thumbup:

That is a fantastic design and nicely executed. I like how the pins look like a rotary magazine.

Lashing to a stick for a spear, OR threading your lanyard through for serious retention.

Great knife Steven, looks like the wait was really worth it

Are you going to use it? or look at it?

Don't honestly know, Spencer.....have SO many knives....and a BIG box full of users...really good ones, too...Busse, Bill Buxton, Ed Caffrey, Bob Crowder, Matt Diskin, Murray Carter, Himalayan Imports Khukuris, R.J. Martin, John W. Smith, CRK Sebenza........

The finish looks to be superb, the knife is not inexpensive, and the wait was reasonably long....but I won't know for sure until it is in my hand.....if I love everything about it, and it fits my hip well.......could wind up thrashing the hell out of it, maybe in a similar manner to what other "users" would do...I'll let you know when it gets here.

Some knives feature things like virtually perfect grinds, tip and edge sharpness, fit/finish and small intangibles that speak to the collector in me that says "keep pristine forever", even if it was designed and built to be a user, and am not feeling the need to apologize for that at all.:D
