Saw a couple of my crazy buddies from Gembloux on that list. You makers would cry if you saw some of the stuff on Mermaid Supply's table like perfectly symmetrical and LEGAL narwhal tusk!!!! (unfortunately only legal over there in the EU) Don Hanson might even have an ivorygasm....lol.
What are the charging for a table at SICAC this year?

Huh? Michel Blum is back to knifemaking? He was one of my favorite makers, back in the days. I wonder what he's into now.

Around € 600 ($ 840 approx.)
That may be more than it was in 2007. I don't remember what the exchange rate was, but it worked out to around $700. I was thinking that a table was 500 Euros back then.

Joss, it's even better. He has a new website as well... http://www.blum-knives.com/

I love his work. I have a small dagger and it's my wife's favorite knife in my collection.

Damn. And here I am, in Australia 'till the 2nd of november.

Kind regards,

Would really like to attend some European shows some day.
SICAC is cool and the neighborhood is really nice, but pricey. As a forged blade fan, you may want to start smaller (for now....the show keeps getting bigger) with Gembloux unless you really want a Paris vacation in addition to the show.. A little more "country" of a location, but cheaper, close enough to Brussels and very friendly. Plus they have a cutting comp.:D Delta flies into Brussels daily and I think American and United do too.

No doubt I'm into the forged blades, however the other types/styles of knives interest me a great deal as well.

Actually, the Solingen Show is the one I would probably most like to attend.
I love the carving, engraving, interesting designed integrals and unique knives in general that's typically on display there.

I've been to all the major European shows (Milan, Paris, Solingen, Gembloux) at least once and all I can say is that IMO the best show by far is Milan (with top tier makers like Loerchner, Bojtos, Puddu, Fogarizzu to name a few) with Solingen and Paris coming in second.

Marcel

I never went to Milan but I was told it is really a high end show : top makers for top collectors... but maybe a bit "snob". Can you really enjoy there when you haven't got 10k$ to spend ?

Of course you can. There are also quite a few especially Italian makers with prices starting at around $1,5K and upwards. Also quite a few American makers attend like Rick Eaton, Rick Dunkerley, Scott Slobodian, Howard Hitchmough, Zaza Revishvili to name a few. Futhermore makers like Roger Bergh, Bertie Rietveld and Vladimir Burkovsky are there. It's really an international show in a classy setting with a great atmosphere. Patrick you really should go at least once.

I have heard that Solingen is a very good show. The upside of that one is that you are still kind of in the low to mid season as far as travel goes. I can fly to Dusseldorf that time of year from Tampa on Delta for a hair over $700. I saw a lot of carving at SICAC in '07, including some of that really wild stuff from the Eastern European guys.
Don't get me wrong. SICAC is a great experience. How can you beat going to a major international knife show on the Left Bank? That time of year all of the real Parisians are back from vacation and the universities are in session, so you have the added benefit of the "scenery" being amazing:D

Last year I went with my daughter for the whole weekend. We booked a hotel (Agora Saint Germain) about 100 meters from the venue. Not the best of hotels but very conveniently close by. The best part of the show location is that it is in walking distance of the Notre Dame, Pantheon, Louvre and other places of interest. It was my daughters first time in Paris and apart from the knife show she had a great time.;)

I stayed at the Hotel Quartier Latin, which is in the same block, I think (right next to the Bier Academy on Rue des Ecoles, which is not a bad thing..lol) Nice little hotel and very close to the venue. Having two Metro stops very close by is a big plus!

Do you mean there's something to say about "real parisians" ? :D

Patrick, in the eighties I worked for Elf Aquitaine in Paris for quite a while, so don't get me started on all the agony and fun I had;):D
