Enough is enough...let's protest!!!

I have to admit I'm not yet tired of G10. While I prefer micarta and definately carbon fiber, it is possible to finish G10 so that it looks very similar to micarta. When it is finished like that, "gription" is no problem. I also still like the way the G10 is finished on the Wegner and CQC7. No complaints yet. I too would like to see makers get away from bead blasting. Black-T coating has it's place in certain situations, but I see no advantage to the USER for beadblasting over the so-called satin finish. Bob Dozier's knives have a decent finish on the blades, without taking too much time to smooth out the grind lines. Can it be that much cheaper to bead blast? As for kydex vs. leather, I have mixed feelings here. I like both, and actually have decided to have some leather sheaths made for my knives that currently have kydex, and vice versa. The best of both worlds!

I attempted to use green G-10 on a kit knife and I thought it sucked. My REKAT Pioneer is G-10, but that's the only knife I have with it. I LOVE Micarta, however, in all its forms. I can't get enough of it. My latest kit knife features a black paper Micarta bolster, stainless steel pins, and cocobolo scales, all highly polished. I can't wait to get photos up here! Good stuff, even in the hands of an amateur like me! My fiancee saw the knife, which I displayed proudly to her, then she took it and scratched her fingernail on the micarta. She said "Oh...I thought that was electrical tape, then handed it back and said "the wood is nice, though!" Oh well....someone has to keep my ego in check I guess!

Man am I relieved. I bought a nice Elishewitz Ares about 6 months ago and then sent it to Recupero for some finishing touches. The result was a beauty with Damasteel blade, Mokume bolster, big pearl slabs for scales and lots of file work. I knew it was definitely not in style with the tac knife crowd. Who knows, in another year it may be fashionable indeed.

Seriously, I'd like to see more knives with natural handle materials and some intelligent decoration where it's appropriate. Sounds like a great trend to me.

On the kydex/leather thing, I know that there's a place for both, and I love kydex when that place is where I want to go. I just don't find a piece of molded plastic to be as warm and sexy as a leather sheath.

For work, the kydex is one thing, but I still like it better at least leather laminated, or coated like JSP does it.

I don't find kydex "cheapening" the way that I do with the bead blast and G-10, it's purely aesthetic and personal. I just lumped it in to put together the perfectly stereotypical tactical rig.

I dont know but it might just be me, but I actually like G10, I know that I would never buy a knife that was like 500 that has G10 on it but on all these other folders I like it because of its strength??

Hahaha...well it must be SUPER-HUMAN strength to fear defeating micarta or Ti.

...unless you're buying liner locking folders with only one liner, i.e. the Spyderco Military.

I'm really not interested in anything but Natural materials. I only want to buy Stag, not Stagalon, STAG! Leather please. 95% of all the knives I see look the same, boring. My answer, don't protest and don't buy it, and if the only way you can get what you want is to buy Custom, then buy Custom. I know I'm out of step with the general knife buying public, but if it's my money who do I have to please? However, I'm not out to change the world, but it's nice to find others that think along the same lines.

I admit it, I don't know much, but I know what I like.

Gents I have in my collection one of the early Gerber LST's in maroon Micarta and it is a very nice sight to behold - I also have one of the new ones in whatever that stuff is they are using - and it's tough - there is much to be said for that aesthethics of the stabalized cocobolo and exotic woods too - but are you ready - I like the G-10 for a knife that can really punish - like my Standard Spyderco.. this is serviceable material but not pretty !

I like G-10, not as much as micarta, but I do like it. It holds up well, hard to scratch, easy to grip. Aluminuim, titanium scratch really easy and feel cold. Same with wood.

Now zytel seems really cheap. I draw the line there. No zytel knives.

Jackyl,
I've been thinking about this thread today at work, long and hard, and I've come to the conclusion that there is a serious glut of G-10 in the market right now. Everywhere you look there is another G-10 handled knife. I have at least a couple dozen currently in my possesion.
G-10 is great handle stuff, but like you, I would really like to see more Linen or Canvas Micarta or some really nicely figured exotic hardwood.
Titanium or steel liners with a stabilized hardwood scales (like on Gary W. Graley's Custom Carnivore) really caught my eye the other night while I was surfing and has me seriously thinking about trying it on my Carnivour or maybe my Axis or even the AFCK.
Exotic hardwoods have a stunning visual appeal which is currently lacking in most of today's folders and even fixed blades.
Many exotic hardwoods are EXTREMELY tough to boot. Perfect for a "tactical" type knife.
I'd still like G-10 in colors, but the figure that one gets from a fine hardwood like Desert Ironwood or Cocobolo or synthetics like Micarta just have an aesthetic appeal that G-10 is woefully lacking. And why not have a "tactical" knife platform with a stabilized exotic hardwood handle. Classy, but deadly serious at the same time.
Who says one can't have it all?
I see a project in the works here...hmmm...

If it's stupid but works, then it isn't stupid!

There's nothing wrong with G-10 for a basic utility knife, but the black IS getting old. If I'm going to be spending the money for a custom, however, I want titanium, bone or stabilized wood. I really want to see more anodized titanium. For example, I like what Neil Blackwood is doing with his neck tantos. Most interesting...

Great feedback guys...maybe someone will take notice.

G10's not bad, but it's over-played.

Knave,
Thanks for the mention! I must say that while the cord wrap over anodize Ti. is functional and grippy, it also is a babe magnet
wink.gif
This is what my customers tell me, realy, I know nothing personally about this characteristic
smile.gif

In my ongoing effort to make G10 more eye appealing, I'm in the process of making 2 Neck Knife Tantos with Torx screw assembly. They will have anodized Ti. spacers under thin, skeletonized G10 handles. This should be a nice looking effect and have good grip from the holes. Again, pictures in a few weeks.

I agree with Beam. G-10 is a quite "warm" handle material. If given a fine polish, it looks and feels(though it's still warmer) just like Micarta.

I've had store owners who insisted that the handles on the Kershaw Random Task were Micarta-not g-10. And the Random Task is only a production knife.

Imagine what a custom maker could do with g-10 if he felt so compelled?
He could choose from a plethora of colors..and even hand polish it for the warm and cozy effect of g-10 without the look.

Couldn't you even sort of mix grey and brown or something together for color, mill little random grooves through the slabs, and polish the g-10 to make it look like stag?

------------------
Yeah! Drop the chalupa...

I'll give you the polished finish on the Kershaws. Great look.

i really have enjoyed the g-10 scales. they are attractive and durable. they suit me just fine...however, i would like to see some different colors. i think everyone is getting sick of the black handled knives.

The cry of the dilletante :" I am sick of: (replace with whatever is currently cool)"

G10 and Zytel have not degraded in the past few years.........they just became "unfashionable". Great materials....personally.I prefer stag and other natural stuffs. But I still respect the TOUGH synthetics.
C'mon, fellas......let's be a bit realistic and a little less "fashionable"
