Sidearm carry options in the outdoors

If I am carrying my XD40 then it is in a Galco shouder hoster. This is my setup 80% of the time. The other 20% I carry my Ruger Backhawk .44 magnum in a strong side OTW holster. I have found the shoulder holster much more comfortable for me on long days in the woods.

I carry strong side, drop leg. I don't like weak side, too easy to be taken away from you. I usually hike with a Ruger Blackhawk or Casull. I'm partial to "old time" guns, but do have a 1911 on me once in a while.

I carry a 1911 in a leather shoulder holster (horizontal). This suits me just fine for being in the woods, but I prefer the standard strong side vertical at 3 o'clock for the range.

Man I lust after a model 60 3in stainless .357, which will probably be my next handgun purchase. The damn lock bugs me, but eh.

I hear S&W might be discontinuing the locks on some models though.

They made a recent run of the 3" full lug adjustable sight 60-10's (.357) without the lock. CDNN Investments had them back in August for under $500.

Id love to have one of those!

Thinking more, I think I want the 2 1/8in barrel more. The 3in is a good one though, I guess it will be what I can find. Im hopin the gun show here next month will have one.

The 3" .38 versions (60-4 and 36-6 or -8) are really nice shooters. Have just enough weight to allow a tad more control, and they are accurate. They use the older non-magnum j frame with the hammer mounted firing pin's and no MIM parts.

I prefer the 2"; it's easier to carry concealed when I'm hiking or fishing..no need scaring the folks :)

If I am backpacking, I keep it in the corner, mesh pocket at the bottom of my backpack. Its easily reachable and fits nicely in a nylon holster in there. If I'm just out hiking I either OC or keep it in a butt pack.

Speaking of scaring people, you should really read up on your laws before carrying a gun, period.

For example, here in North Carolina, there is no law against open carry of firearms. However, you -can- be arrested and charged for "going armed to the terror of the people".

"By common law in North Carolina, it is unlawful for a person to arm himself/herself with any unusual and dangerous weapon, for the purpose of terrifying others, and go about on public highways in a manner to cause terror to others. The N.C. Supreme Court states that any gun is an unusual and dangerous weapon for purposes of this offense. Therefore, persons are cautioned as to the areas they frequent with firearms."

Now, is that beatable? Of course. It would be hard to prove you were going armed "in a manner to cause terror to others", but who wants to deal with the hassle of an arrest and legal fines? My point is, unless you are on private land, it's not always a good idea to carry a gun.

I recently picked up a Chest Raider from Rob Humelbaugh (Survival Sheath Systems), as I was somewhat apprehensive about open carry in some of the more populated areas, and I feel my concealed setup does not lend itself well to wearing bigger backpacks/kid carriers. I like it. I considered the safepacker, but settled on the Chest Raider because it is a standalone system that can be worn securely with or without a backpack, and because it has some nice storage options for things like a psk, map, binocs, radio, flashlight, extra small items like batteries and SAKs, things like that. It looks tactical as hell, especially by itself, and I imagine most people who have half a brain can figure out what it's for. But with a backpack on, it does start to appear more innocuous. I love the way it carries my G29, though. Easy and quick to access. And when I ditch my pack to go get water, do a little evening hike, etc, it goes with me. I can post pics of my setup a little later if anyone's interested.
