Sig P229 vs. HK P7 vs. Walther P99

toast, I started out wanting one of the S&W 629 "Moutain Guns", but after shooting the Taurus Raging Bull I was hooked. The Bull is built even more heavily than the 629 (it was originally designed for the .454 Casul) and that porting does an incredible job of taming recoil and muzzle jump.

I recently discovered another side-benefit of the Bull. For my recent trip to Alaska I researched bear-defense ammo. The most impressive stuff I found was a .44 Magnum +P round by Garrett that says it should only be used in a Ruger Super Redhawk. After consulting with the maker I tried it in my Bull and was very pleased with the results. Not only was it comfortable to shoot, despite the 1400 foot/pounds of muzzle energy (up into the .454 power range), but the Bull accepted the longer-than-standard cartridges without a problem.

I've heard rumors that Taurus may eventually release a Raging Bull with a shorter barrel. In the meantime, I can recommend a good gunsmith... :D

You have good choices, cream of the crop, so to speak. I am, however, partial to the P7M8 for reliability, reliability, fit and finish, accuracy and, in case I failed to sufficiently enphasize - reliability. With that said, your intended use may point more towards the USP, another excellant choice.

Hey Costas, somewhere in my harddrive, I have a JPEG of you shooting a Glock... Of the three you mentioned, the P7 will have the most consistant trigger. The others would have a DA/SA transition. Why not a 1911 style in 9mm or .40S&W?

bob, very tempting. .44+P sounds like a ridiculous round at 1400fps. i thought 165g @ 1060fpd in a .45 was nasty. for bear defense, check out a post i put on the wilderness forum...not for the meek.

Costas, thinking of going bigger yet? :D i do have a psp to get rid of. i have never seen nor heard of a bad thing against the p7's. that's what federal park police use. if you had just those three models, go with HK. only other nine i'd think of getting would probably be a sig 210.

Well, John has caught me with this older photo of me shooting a Glock, so I have to make a statement!
I do respect and admire Glock autopistols, and I enjoy shooting them. But all my friends have Glocks, and I can shoot one anytime I want, so I don't want to buy yet another Glock to add to the arsenal! I want something else.

If money and mag availability was no object, I would have already decided for the P7. I will be shopping around, anyway I am not in a hurry to decide. Thanks for the valuable input, I understand that there are no objections to any of these three guns, so I will have a nice time comparing them and changing my mind a few times!

Ok, I tried to avoid this thread. Here goes,

1. GLOCK (I know, I know)

2. 1911 -Baer, Wilson, Colt Gold Cup, Springfield Nat. Match

3. Sig (if it has to be one of the 3 mentioned, go with the SIG)

4. H&K USP (for target shooting, I don't think you will like the squeeze cocking P7)

5. Browning Hi Power (one of the best 9mm ever made)

6. Beretta 92 Brigadier (good target shooter, very smooth)

Had to mention the Glock, but before you make your choice check out the 1911's.

How's the squeeze-cocker on the P7 in terms of usability? It seems like a VERY simple, and safe way to cock the pistol, but is there muscle training involved, so you remember to cock the pistol, or is it more "automiatic" and just happens?

I've got a 92F pre-ban, with two mags, and I love it! LOL I saw the first "Lethal Weapon" movie way back when it first came out, and said "I gotta get me one of those!" :D

Having owned several High Powers, I must say they come with some really crappy triggers and accuracy is lacking. I still love them because I am a walnut and blued steel kind of guy. They just need a little tinkering. But, since this thread is about the 3 listed pistols and not Brownings, let me say that the single best auto pistol I have EVER owned was the SIG 229 in 357 SIG. This one, I really regret trading off. I owned it long enough to fire off over 1000 rounds, and not once did it jam or malfunction in any way. Try that with your out of the box 45. I foolishly traded it off for an AR15, but REALLY miss that pistol.

See2,
There are several features of the P7 that make it the most user friendly defensive sidearm that I've ever used. Specifically:

--The front strap squeeze cocking mechanism that you mention is also the slide release mechanism! Hence, once you've dropped the empty magazine and inserted the next full one, all you have to do is re-squeeze the cocking mechanism and you immediately send the slide home on a chambered round with the safety off and the pistol ready to fire in essentially single action mode. You never have to adjust your hand position in any way to accomplish all of the above. Further, the squeeze cocking mechanism is designed in such a way that while it requires approximately 10 lbs of pressure (just guessing) to initially compress, once you have it completely compressed, it only requires approx 2 lbs of pressure to keep it compressed. Just maintaining a decent grip on the pistol requires at least that much force, so fatigue due to the cocking mechanism is never a factor.

--The magazine release button is located at the bottom rear of the trigger guard and is completely ambidextrous (a feature that has been carried on in the excellent USP line of pistols). Thus the magazine release can be easily manipulated by simply sliding your trigger finger straight back to the rear and exerting a little downward force on the release lever. This makes reloading an inherently safe procedure (as your finger is off the trigger), and as an added benefit, even dropping the empty magazine requires no repositioning of the strong hand during reloading.

All of this adds up to a pistol in which combat reloads are lightning fast, yet very safe evolutions. Combine this with the well above average accuracy potential of the P7 and you have a real winner. A bit of training is necessary to become proficient with this pistol (just to break habits formed by using more conventional semi-auto pistols), but it's time well spent.:)

Thanks, Bill!! Wow - nice description, man. I felt like I was holding the pistol!! :D Now I have to get one... where'd I put that spare $1,000 I had lying around... :D

I have a High Power Practical....nice shooter but I don't know if I'd carry it. Para-Ord P-14 that I built up myself...very nice shooter but see above. I know this wasn't one of your choices but here goes.....my favorite gun in my safe is my ten year old Sig P-226, I've put thousands of rounds through it without a single problem.

ps: for all you guys looking for noise and flash.....try either one of these: S&W 629 Mountain Gun (round butt, slim .44 special barrel assembly..4", very light .44 Mag.) Or a .44 mag Desert Eagle...talk about scaring other people at the range, I've had people leave the stalls next to me because my gun was making them flinch!
