Ok, so i've made arrangements to sell my Taurus 24/7 compact and my Taurus 605, and I will be purchasing a Sig p229, Sig p239, and a Glock 26. I couldn't decide so I'll get them all! Thanks guys for your help and input!

I've had a .40 P229 for about 10 years and it's one of the best guns I've ever owned. The action (DA) is smooth and consistent and in a decade of regular rapid firing (SA) I haven't experienced a single hang up - I can't say that about any other gun I've ever owned. Take down and clean up is a breeze too. This is a heavy gun, especially considering its medium-size status in Sig's lineup but the heft of the gun makes recoil a negligible factor during follow up shots. My older version doesn't have an accessory rail - but truth be told I'm not the type to hang a flash light on a pistol anyway. I did pony up for the internal Lasermax. It's actually a replacement for the factory guide rod. I don't use it often but I can tell you it EASILY keeps you on the paper at 10 yards. I wouldn't consider this as a concealed carry for myself. It weighs about 2 pounds unloaded and boasts a 12+1 capacity. The rough dimensions are 7"x5.5"x1.5" which doesn't even come close to concealable for someone with my frame living in the climate I live in. Even if I did live somewhere that made winter jackets part of my daily wardrobe I still wouldn't want this to be my EDC because of the weight alone. This is a great shooter with thoughtful ergonomics and perfect (IMO) balance. The P229 is one of the few guns that I would endorse this strongly. Buy it - you won't be disappointed.

I'm looking to trade in my Taurus 24/7 Pro Compact .45 in for a nice upgrade when I come home on R&R. I have been eyeing the 229. Can anyone give me their personal opinions and experiences with this handgun?

I had one for years before giving it to my brother to use as a duty gun when he became Chief of Police back home where I grew up.. Mine was originally sold as a 357 Sig. I bought a drop in Sig 40 Cal barrel for it and later I bought another one from Cheaper than dirt that was a silver barrel also that dropped in. While this silver drop in barrel worked okay it was not as accurate as either of the Sig barrels. We had a lot of fun with that gun. I had sent it off to Walter Birdsong to have it Black T finished by him. Used it a while after that and gave it to my brother later after that. One of the things I noted about the Sig guns altogether no matter which one I owned was the finish. I've owned a 228 a 230 a 226 and I think at least one other in there at one time but all had what I would have to call pretty poor finishes compared to my Glocks. Sig could take some lessons in my opinion from Glock on a durable finish. My 229 looked like it had seen a life time of holster use in just six or eight months of carry. By comparisons my Glocks have a good look to them after years and years of holstering with only minimal signs of wear. Even the Birdsong Black T finish was not as good as the Glock factory finish if you ask me but thats another story.

Sig makes a great gun. I did like the double action model I had and I do like that over the Glock which was why I decided to go with the 229. The 229 is a thick model. In single action mode mine was a tack driver in the 357 caliber.

The Sig 229 is unquestionably a quality firearm, if you are more concerned about carrying it concealed. I would say you probably could find something that would be more comfortable and just as reliable. Having said that, I used to carry the 229 IWB exclusively and it was doable (I am 6'3" 220). The problem is the weight, double stack mag and thickness of the slide, I moved to the Glock 23 and never looked back (For Concealment). I have both the .357 Sig and .40 S&W barrels for the 229, and it resides on my side when appropriate.

Good luck and thanks for your service Jarod!

It's my pleasure, brother! Thank you all for your comments, they are very helpful!

I have a 229 SAS in .40 and I love it. It feels like a brick in my hand. I can strip it to the bone inside of 30 seconds including the magazine. Many people I have talked to have been critical of the DAK trigger system. I don't have much to compare it to but it feels ok to me. It is very heavy especially when it's fully loaded. Heavy isn't bad when it comes to recoil and accuracy. I don't carry it much though. No safety. No problem. Very unlikely to go off accidentally. Everyone who has shot it has been impressed.

Sigs are some of the finest pistols ever made.I've had a 220 for 18 years and it would be the last hand gun I would get rid of.I can't say enough good things about Sig Saur.

The trigger reset on the 229 is way too long if you ask me. That is why I carry the Glock...
