Sigh, I've overlooked these threads thousands of times but...

I'm not looking for a pack-I have enough packs to outfit an Army platoon. I'm looking for an easily accessible and protective camera case that can be mounted to a waist or a pack. I have North Face, Eberlestock, Mountainsmith, Gregory, Osprey and Kelty packs already.

I traveled all over w/ my old nikon in a padded softpack, and just babied it. That said, I'd be mighty twitchy about the peril to any camera gear not in hardshells.

Noting the padding issues mentioned in other posts, you may want to consider the Maxpedition Saber Cat waistpack. It can be worn as a waistpack or with a shoulder strap (sold separately). The waist straps can be tucked out of sight, which is nice if using a shoulder strap. I've used this pack to carry a Nikon D-90 with 18-105 lens and a separate 70-300 Nikor lens, with room to spare.

I'll be hauling a D60 with the stock 18-55mm Nikkor lens and a 70-300mm f/4-5.6G AF Nikkor to start with. We'll see where this amateur photography thing goes before I drop 500-2000 dollars on a nicer lens... especially since work has been scarce. I'm shopping nice point and shoots too, I lost an A630 and a brand spanking new A650 to lens errors within 3 weeks of each other this year so I really don't want to support Canon any more than necessary...

Don't worry about the Equipment, the actual DSLR are incredible compared to what we had 6 years ago. I will tell you whatever the price of the equipment, a crappy 4 Mpx pic is a worthy as a crappy 20 Mpx pic, but a beautiful 2 Mpx picture is way better than a lame 22 Mpx pic. The equipment is just a tool to help you achieve certain goals, but it has no value compared to the opportunity and the way you show a certain event. BTW I use a very small Canon SD780IS most of the time especially when flying, and I have some of the most beautiful shots from it.

I hear you, 2009 has been a hard year, happy its ending if you ask me :)

I personnaly have equal respect for Nikon than for Canon, its just I started with Canon and over the years the investment makes switching brands impossible because of the non-compatibility.

As for your gear, its a nice setup to begin with, just watch out for your lenses because they are telescopic lenses (they vary in length) and this is a fragile design, so whatever you get get something padded I wouldn't try my luck on them.

Seeing the gear you'll be using, maybe the Mongo S-Type Versipack might fulfill you.

For the lens (especially the 70-300) a H2O bottle sheath can work depending on the diameter of the lens (77mm for most or 56 mm for small ones) and you can pad it easily with foam.

I've got maxpeds, And quite a bit of slr gear. 100%, get a lowepro, or tamrac bag. I've got both in a few styles, and they're bombproof. Tamrac makes holster style bags that would belt, sling, or packmount very well. I've got one that's about 20 years old or so

As Jeff says, it's not the arrow, it's the indian-I can milk a Canon point and shoot as good as anyone, I took 16,000 pictures in the last five months. I'll take a look at Tamrac, it just kinda irks me that there isn't a MOLLE compatable camera system out there yet (Jeff, hint hint)

here's a great holster:

I currently own a Mountainsmith Exposure and am extremely happy with it. They have a bag called the Aurora II that is a lumbar pack with a detachable carry strap and I think that's the best I'll be able to do without modifying a MOLLE style pouch. It is also very reasonably priced...

Hi all

I use a Lowepro slingshot 200 aw for my camera case for everday use.

I also use a Maxpedition Colossus for day hikes, the main compartment will hold a D90 with a 18 to 200 zoom just right, with room left over for a snack, knives, small binocular in the other pockets.
