Was over in our body shop trouble shooting an issue and heard a sound I'm very familiar with.... stones and files on steel. Apparently QC inspectors use a 220x or so oilstone to look for defects in our body panels after stamping and welding.... nice stones, lots of them every where... And files... piles of them.... and EDM stones that the the body repair guys use :( my supervisor saw me picking stuff up and holding them lovingly and said "we'd better get you out of here before you're fired over a damn file." I need to see if I can some free stuffs....

Sure, not as cool as some of y'all with all your fancy machines........ :p

I can't see good tools go to waste, either. What if you wait till they're in the dumpster, then it's all good, right?

Depends on who puts them in the dumpster.

I was working with some electricians one time and heard them say they would have to throw away an extension cord as it had a rub. I asked if I could have it and they started giving me all their stuff. I had to tell them more than once that unless it was really trash that I couldn't take it.

I got most of a 200# roll of lead (for roof flashings, etc) because it cost less to give it to me than it did to return it to the supplier or dispose of it.

Sometimes things just happen. I was looking for some copper and stainless sheet and my father in law, who works for a roofing company, was coming up for a visit. My wife asked him if there was any sheet left in their shop. (she used to work there and knew they hired out their metal work now) He said there was lots and he would bring some up as it was just sitting around.... I now have 50 lbs of 20 gauge copper sheet.... Some of it is lead covered but I can deal with that. He asked me if I needed anything else and he would bring it up next time. Glad he likes me. :-)

Where I work we make shoes.
Larger pieces of leather that are not good enough for the shoes end up on a pile at my work place.
Otherwise they're thrown away.
A well meant 'thank you' gets you a lot :)

Maybe they can order a few axtra and let you buy them for the price they pay.
Usually cheaper then buying one or two pieces as a private person.

Ive been in that position before WIll, I worked as a furniture maker in a nice shop in Auburn, Our wood shipments would sometimes be worth over 80,000 dollars. When we would cut off a piece of exotic I had to wait until someone threw it in a dumpster and crawl 10 foot into it to get it. Damn it was some nice wood tho,LOL

Will
you should politely ask who is in charge of throwing that stuff away and make a friend !! buy them lunch/dinner/give them a knife, ive seen places where if something is out of a package they are instructed to throw it away ..or use x times and then throw it ..ive known some guy's that have recieved thousand's of dolllars worth of stuff beacuse the company's policy is to use it x times and then throw it away..it can't hurt to ask !! throw all that
"junk" into a pile that you will dispose of for them  of course at no cost so you are helping them by disposing of it for free:D:D:D it can't hurt to ask right ?? good luck . best of all it should not put your JOB in danger that way.

You do realize this thread is over three months old and Will has not personally logged on in the last couple of months. Just a head's up.

But hopefully he is on the mend and will see this thread and know we are thinking of him and missing him and wishing him the best.
