I ran across this sign on yesterday's hike in Harriman State Park in NY. Anyone know what it means? It was pretty far off the nearest trail.

Diver down?

LOL - I've never seen it before, I'm interested to know as well.

Looks like signs I've seen here along the borders of military property. I looked on google maps and Harriman does border West Point Military Academy property.

Looks like you found where Harriman ends and West Point Begins.

Hmmm, perhaps this is a leftover sign than from previous days because it was not even close to West Point. I have been on the border of West Point a few times and there is no doubt about it, signs posted every 10 or 20 feet saying "Military Installation Keep Out".

Maybe I'm wrong, but it kindly looks like it's in pretty good shape - as if maybe it hasn't been up there for long. How high up was it? It doesn;t look like a State Park sign. What does Harriman SP say about it?

It did look pretty new, but maybe it's just some uber-durable secret military composite material made during the 50s. It was about 6 feet off the ground.

I think it means he can See You - and you are 40.

 I am 40

I have seen some posts with the same color pattern near the trails in some of the Pennsylvania state parks.
If you find out what they mean, please let me know.

looks like it might be an orientering marker..sometimes they have codes like that one or punchs so you can record them and navigate to the next one. Just a guess..

I couldn't tell you the specifics, but I think that is a blaze, telling you what trail you are near, and where you are at along the trail, for when the trail is not visible, due to being buried beneath snow.

It's a blaze--it's the right size, shape, and height.

I've never seen the red-and-white pattern before, and have no idea what CU 40 would mean.

Check out Figure 70.

there is a park police shooting range in harriman I believe it is bordered by signs similar to that... I got a summons accidentally hiking into the parking lot..i don't remember if that is the exact sign but it looked similar... I haven't been back in years since than
