Signal panels, flares, and strobes---thoughts?

Strobe or blink -- and is there a difference? (I thought there was.)
 
Anyone use one of the Photons that have a strobe option? I always carry a space blanket and figure it would work as a signal panel in a pinch. Also have a mirror but agree the free CDs are a great idea.

Someone a while back mentioned the possibility of using a kite to maybe loft one of the little photon strobes. I guess its use would be limited, but interesting anyway....
