Signed up for both PM2 Orange and PM2 Brown Sprints - are they too similar?

Is anybody else getting both the Orange PM2 in CTS-XHP and the Brown in SV35VN? I'm wondering if other than color there will be much difference. I dont have any of the better spyderco's. I have an orange delica 4 ffg and an endura 4 ffg and enjoy both a lot. Just wondering if this will be a sensible addition to the collection to get several PM2's or if I am going sprint crazy :D

"Sensible" has nothing to do with this. :) But acquiring, collecting and using sprint runs can be a lot of fun. I'm pretty wrapped up in it too.

I'm on so many sprint run pre-order lists that I had to just go look and see if I'm getting the orange and brown Para 2s. Which of course I am.

I think s35vn is the weakest out of the the pm2 sprints. I don't mean toughness wise im saying overall steel preformance. If you want two pm2 get one in m390 and one in xhp. There is even some good deals on cts20cp paras running around on secondary market

Steel wise I wondered if it would be preferable to just order a regular para 2 in SV-30. OTOH I like the brown a lot and I understood that SV-35 was 20-30% tougher than SV-30 (ergo less prone to chipping) and about the same in edge retention. Chris reeve has switched to SV-35.

Hard not agree with these two gentlemen. I ordered one of the brown/S35VN LEs, but just out of irrantional interest in the color and with the thought of maybe doing a scale swap down the road some time. The other Para2 sprints so far have offered really compelling steel variations (S90V, 20CP; XHP also but to me slightly less compelling). S35VN is more or less the same as the standard S30V blade, or close enough that I personally don't think it's compelling...but I will be buying one anyway. :D Like PN said, "semsible" has nothing to do with this.

Both are great steels. S35VN is a very tough steel and easy to sharpen. XHP may hold an edge a bit longer.
You can't go wrong with either. I would just get the color you like the best, or get both like I'm doing.

I had a pre-order for the brown and blue PM2s (I now have my blue one in hand), but canceled the brown one once the orange PM2 was announced for pre-order. Frankly I probably won't use any of them anyway, and three non-user PM2s didn't seem like the way I wanted to spend almost $500, all within a few months. To each his own . . .

I agree with Mr. noodle, what does sensible have to do with this particular scenario? You have a specific knife and 2 variations, the only differences being the steel and the handle color. If you like it, buy it. :D

Yeah, wish the brown pm2 was more like the military with XHP steel. Think I might get the blue sometime and or maybe the green(depends on the shade). Guess I will wait and see what they look like and see if I grab the one I like.

The same could be said about the three sprints released so far, stainless, super edge holding (which didn't stop me). I have also ordered the XHP PM2, and plan on ordering the CTS-204P PM2 (green handle). The Brown PM2 is the only one I'm on the fence about, the reason for that is because I feel its too close to regular production S30V, however I prefer black g10 to brown g10, so the handle doesn't really grab me either. Really the only reason I'm considering it is it would be the only PM2 sprint I wouldn't have if I skipped it, so it'll just be up to if I can find one at a decent price and if I happen to have the extra money at the time I find it.

S30V and CTS-30BP are basically the same steel from different companies as well

If you like the brown, I'd wager you can get rid of that Orange one pretty easily (email me if you want to get rid of it, I'm waiting on an Orange one as well, but I love XHP and Orange, so a second one won't hurt me).

I'm trying to convince my machinist friend to mill me out some CF scales for one of my Paras - just so I don't have to spend some more money on the S90V one. I'm very close to pulling the trigger on a CTS-20CP one as well.

Like PowerNoodle said, this isn't about being sensible, it's about the hobby overall. I'll say this - you've picked a very fine knife to have in more than one steel/color - the PM-2 is my absolute favorite.

Depends on if they both sell out quickly or people sell them later near the price(or if I save all my pennies). I've heard a lot of people like XHP so I figured I might try it.

I think I am going to skip the brown and get the orange and the green. I'd rather my sprints have special steels. Thanks for all the replies. They have helped with the decision. Any chance of a PM2 in M4? I really want to have a knife in M4 and just may order a Gayle Bradley to have now as the sprints are all later in the year.

I'm really hoping for a sprint in CPM-M4 too, I'm sure there will be one eventually, hopefully in a interesting color/handle configuration, (moonglow, red g10, CF, Ti)

Too late for that one, other than as a resale. The orange XHP limited edition sold out very quickly.
