With my very mediocre sharpening skills I have been able to touch- up/sharpen flat, V, hollow and scandi grind edges to satisfactory shaving sharpness. However, I have a couple of 'problem children' of the convex variety. In this case it was definitely the 'Father's' lacking as these came very sharp from a BF maker that is known for his amazing edges. And yes I've read and watched tutorials and done the mousepad and strop thing - no dice. Simon got these things even sharper than the maker:eek: I'm not gonna disclose the maker, but I believe he too would be impressed.
I also had a new V grind knife that while sharp, just did not glide through paper, food and greenstick as some of my other knives. Lastly, came the blacksheep, a flat grind knife that despite a return trip to the maker just never got sharp. Simon reprofiled both of these knives to freehanging newspaper slicing sharp.
I must admit that I was more than a bit skeptical about the outcome of this trial as he offers a 1st free sharpening and then when he does charge the prices are ridiculously low - sorry Simon IMHO. Kudos to this young man for a conscientious business sense that prompted him to receive-sharpen/reprofile and post back my knives to me in one day:eek: And there was good coummunication before and after the process. Hell, he even made me a strop loaded w/ compound!
Anyway, sharp, sharp convex edges, super low prices, and more than anything a sense of well being that someone gives a damn about what they do. Simon you da man.

john, i'm honored with your public appreciation here, i'm glad that you are happy with your edges and wish you luck in maintaining them.:thumbup:

thanks very much for you compliments, i'm glad that you feel i deserve them...but i'm going to play humble here and say that i just enjoy making things sharp, and that it was my pleasure.

it was a pleasure working with your knives.

Yeah, Simon is a top-notch guy, from what I can tell. I'm a bare-bones sharpener, myself, so I'll probably have to be calling on him in the near future.

Simon, I'm keeping your info handy. I do want to learn to do a better job sharpening myself but it's always good to have a backup plan. :)

I must say that Simon really has some serious skills when it comes to making things sharp. He sharpened a couple of blades for me a while back and I started a thread about it but somehow it got overlooked and faded away. He made some nice knives I have even better. Watch out for him he is like a sponge when it comes to all the knife talk around here and it reflects in his designs. I don't have any of his knives but I remember his first few and now they are really getting good. He understands the simplicity of it all, if it cuts it will be used if it does not it will be sold or even worse, stuck in a glass prison. Simon I wish you luck in this crazy industry and look forward to seeing more of your knives especially the machete I saw on your website.

Hey Siguy, I have a question for you!

I have a set of Wood Jewel puukkos and I am having a hell of a time taking off the "micro bevel" to make it the scandi I want. Mainly its a pain because the mirco bevels are hardly micro. Is that something you could handle?

I will be away from the computer tomorrow and can only check email on my phone, so could you drop me a line at DarbyFett at Gmail.com. Thanks!

I agree, Simon has the touch when it comes to sharpening the convex edge.

I had a chuckle at the CT Gathering when he was teaching our two moderators a thing or two about maintaining scary sharp convex edges.

He is a talented young man; forum members should have no worries in sending sharpening work his way.

. . . and apparently he's right in our backyard (for some of us). I may be sending along an uncooperative Northstar if I don't get it to my satisfaction after my next attempt.

Hey Simon, I'm actually keeping my convex edges sharp w/ that strop you made me. You were right, I needed to go to go a little steeper to hit the edge. That and easing up on the pressure made the difference. What is the blackish/grey compound you loaded it with? And thanks brother for having faith in me - at least my convex sharpening skills - when I myself had given up.:)
And let me reiterate that the two originally non-convex knives that you reprofiled for me to convex have been transformed into awesome cutters.

I could not agree more. Siguy does one hell of good job. He will see a lot more of mine.:D

the compound is regular old gray tripoli that i picked up at the hardware store about two years ago.

i will eventually get a wider range of compound, probably some of bark river's stuff and some of the green CrO, but in the meantime the tripoli has been working fine.

thanks again for the kind words guys.
