SIGUY and Theo were at it a couple weekends ago testing out Simon's machete. After seeing that blade handle what it handled, I asked Simon to make me one. To give you an idea, at the WLC, we have some really big knotted and seasoned maple for big bonfires. Simon chose the biggest gnarliest piece and used a tamping iron to help beat it through. If we had a sledge, Simon would probably have used that. He really wanted to see what could be done.
In retrospect, safety glasses probably should have been worn but on the positive side, this extreme test is above and beyond the standard use of a knife. While I don't recommend destruction tests and don't really have any use for them, this test was done to see what the edge could do without the intent of breaking the knife.
The spine was the only part of the blade that showed wear. A few impact marks were all that could be seen after the abuse.
If you ever doubted Simon as a knifemaker, please rid your mind of these thoughts. In a few years, he will be one of the guys to go to.
Nice work brother!
Last but not least, is Theo enjoying this test or something else? Post what you think he is doing here.
