SIL Tarp/Poncho durability

Will said:
Funny this thread should start... I am looking to buy a new tarp, and am trying to decide if it is worth paying more for the lighter weight (SIL one). It is if the SIL ones are as durable as the regular nylon ones. (I was comparing the MEC ones, the have both the regular and SIL tarps). But just reading Bear's post on silicone 'impregnated' versus 'coated' I noticed that MEC say theirs is silicone coated, and Integral Design say theirs is silicone impreganted. Hmmm, I wonder if I am on to something here.

.

Will,

The MEC tarp is impregnated with silicone not coated, a mistake calling it so by MEC.

Worth the money I assure you, I own the larger tarp and its heaven.

thanks Skam,

I am trying to decide between the regluar Scout Tarp for $35 and the Sil Scout tarp for $80. Several miles down the trail I will forget about the extra $50 if the Sil is as durable. Light weight is more important to me than money, but durability is also important. Especially if I want to use it as a ground sheet as well as a tarp.

"Skammer," county of origin is an issue for some. As for me, you know nothing about what I think about buying goods made outside the U.S. or, for example, what knives I own or buy.

Nor do you apparently know the meaning of the word "hypocritical." Apparently it's a substitute for "bad" in your vocabulary. .

Thomas,

When one posts the point "Made in the USA vs Vietnam" How is one supposed to interpret that coment other than assuming anything outside the USA should be avoided for whatever reason. As to what goods you buy or why I truely do not care. I am talking about tarps.

Well, it could be that, all things being equal, one wants the income to go to folks in our country rather than another country. Or it could be, all things being equal, one wants the income to go to a country that is not a Communist dictatorship.

Or maybe, things don't have to be equal. Some in this Forum will pay a premium for goods in order to support fellow citizens. Some take that position out of hostility. Some take that position out of love for their fellow citizens -- who are of every ethnic heritage on earth.

It meant "anything outside the USA should be avoided" TO YOU. I merely provided information. The secondary meaning was in your heart/head. If you look hard enough for something you do not like, you will find an "interpretation" that helps you find it, Skammer.

In this case, the domestic product is less expensive per sq. ft. I have no apology for offering that information for the use of those who come here.

True enough Thomas, point taken and I do not disagree for the most part ;) .

You can get 1.3 ounce silicone impregnated ripstop nylon for $10.50 per yard (officially 62 inches wide, in reality about 5.5 or more feet). An uncut piece woks fine as a tarp, but if you want to get fancy, add another few bucks for a grommit kit. Make yourself a huge tarp with a few minutes work for $20-40.

Why don't you try www.textileoutfitters.com.... bulk sil-nylon is sold for a paltry $18.50/meter.

I believe it is listed at 1.3 oz/yard or something like that.

D

Ed. Textile Outfitters pruce is in Can. $$

Campmor is $.875 U.S./Sq. ft. for the completed 8'x10' tarp

At $10.65 U.S./ 62" yd., you are paying $.68 U.S. / sq. ft. for the material

At $ 8.50 U.S./ 62" yard, the price drops to $.54 U.S./ sq. ft.

If the Canadian dollar = $.75 U.S., $18.50 Can. for a 1 meter x 60" piece makes the price for material = $.85 U.S./ sq. ft.

Will,

While I never owned the regular scout tarp I have used it and slept under it(a friends).

It is a well built tarp no question. I have had no durability issues with the Sil tarp. I don't abuse it either but it is pretty durable in my opinion and unlike the regular tarp if it gets a rip it won't spread.

The Sil tarp also weighs much less and packs VERY small. My 10x12 tarp packs to 1/3 the size of my friends smaller guide tarp. ;)

Whe you hadle it first you will think its flimsy but its surprizingly tough.

I think its money well spent personally.
