can someone tell me what the order from worst to best is of types of belts for knife making
i think it is AO zirconium and ceramic
but i never really hear about silicon carbide
how is it and what can i use it for

if it attach a 1/3 horsepower motor to and identical 1/3 horsepower motor would it then be 2/3
I am thing of attaching a spare 1/3 horse power motor to the other part of by belt sander
( i have 2 x 42 craftsman and motor is from either old craftsman table saw or grizzly bench grinder)

sorry for posting so much

AlOx belts are not much good for steel, but work for handles. Silicon Carbide is a general use belt for metal.
Blue CZ belts are great and are the workhorses for most folks in bevel shaping. Ceramic and their many cousins are great for hogging and rough shaping. The Gator and Trizac belts have structured abrasives, and are superb.

In belts, the old adage ,"You get what you pay for." is usually true. The better belts cost more.

As to adding a second motor to a 2X42 combo grinder....in theory 1/3 + 1/3 = 2/3........but in practicality it isn't that simple. It would be far better to put the same amount of effort into building a GIB and using a 1HP motor.

As well, silicon carbide is the most efficient belt to use for working on mammoth tooth. Frank

I got some cheapo SC 24 grit belts and they are the worst cutting belts I have. Maybe the good stuff works better, but I'd even rather use AO than these SC. They just burnish stuff and don't remove anything at all, even at such a coarse grit. I'm sure other people have had other experiences with better product though.
