Help! I would like to make a hidden tang knife from a 6 inch wootz bar. Given the price of wootz I want to show as much of it as possible. Therefore I would like to have a carbon steel tang silver brazed to the wootz. Can anyone out there do this for me? I do not have the tools or knowledge to do the silver braze myself. Thanks in advance.

Try to find an air-condition-refigeration repair person in your area. They should be able to do it for you. If you cannot find one try a local college where the teach welding they can also do it for you. If all else fails e-mail me I will do it if you pay the postage.

Beyond, I'd be more than happy to weld the tang on for you. I use a litle wire feed welder for my tangs and it makes a real strong joint. If you'd like me to do it, email me. L6steel@aol.com

Always think of your fellow knife makers as partners in the search for the perfect blade, not as people trying to compete with you and your work!

Sounds like it is time to learn.....
Just go down to the local hardware or plumbing suppl house and tell them that you need some siver braze and the flux for it.They can advise you on any question that you will hve about the brazing. It can be done with one of those hand held propane torchesthat you can buy at wal mart they work more efficentaly with the map gas instead of propane ( these arethe inexpesive ones that just have a head that you screw on to the bottle) the process is relly no different than when you solder on a guard.
Just email me and I will help walk you through it.
It is better to learn now so you don't have this happen later onwhen you need to do it again for a Damascus blade or even a carbon blade that you want a little longer and don't have enough metal to make anything but a short tang,or if you want to make a through tang with a threaded buttcap or if you want to put a buttcap on a piece with a screw attached to it so it will stay in place...You really should learn this as it will be something that you will use allot on some styles of Blades.

I got 2 sticks of silver braze from a source and they never told me I needed flux. Could it be built onto the rod. Bruce I thought you would need the heat of the oxy acetylene to get it hot enough. Cory

When I got my first silver braze I also bought a small plastic jar of a paste flux,I don't know what it is and I don't know if you can get it already on the rod like you can with most brass rod brazing material.I would call teh store and ask some questions about the flux.

Flux on brazing rods cleans the metal and also forms a gas to shield it from air to prevent "pinholes" and oxyidation.
