This is a Coin Knife made from a real 1956 Hidalgo* Ten Pesos Mexican .900 silver coin. It's one coin, split in half, with two folding blades; one a cutting blade and the other a nail file. Blades and spring are of 1/16" 440C steel. The coin is 40mm in diameter (just over 1.5") - a little larger than a US silver dollar. It features an integral "bail" to attach to a keychain or necklace. It comes in a handmade black lambskin pocket sheath. (The photos show the Coin Knife with an optional keychain - I work with a local Yucatecan jeweler who hand crafts them from .925 silver. SOLD US (including FedEx economical insured to US or Canada. $15 extra to most of EU) keychain is an extra.

A beautiful little knife! Very slim - an easy everyday carry! You can see photos of some of the other coins I use HERE

I am a full time knifemaker working in Merida, Yucatan Mexico. I ship knives internationally on a regular basis via FedEx. I accept Paypal and credit cards.

I use almost exclusively local handle materials that I gather and mill or process myself. Dense tropical hardwoods as well as wild and ranched deer, cow, bull and water buffalo horns.

The silver escutcheons are made from old Mexican silver coins and are pinned through the liners. You can still see some of the surface irregularities of the coins. All of the pins are nickel silver and are hammered over and left slightly proud of the handle. The decorative file work and carving are precise and carefully done, but you can also see that it was done by hand – I don’t sand or polish the file-cuts.

*The Mexican Hidalgo 10 Pesos Silver Coin was minted from 1955-1956. It was created to honor the 19th century priest, Miguel Hidalgo, who rallied for independence from Spanish colonial rule. He is referred to as "Father of the Nation.". The coin contains a total of .8357 troy oz of fine silver.

The design features the Mexican coat of arms on the obverse, picturing an eagle clutching a snake in its beak and claw while perched on the branch of a prickly pear cactus. Surrounding the eagle are the words, "ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS," or "United Mexican States," and the coin's denomination, weight, year and purity.

On the reverse of the coin Hidalgo's portrait appears atop his name, with "INDEPENDENCIA Y LIBERTAD" written along the upper edge.

Gracias!
here's an interesting one: made from an 1898 Silver Un Peso coin ……… actually minted in 1949 from the original (but slightly altered) dies! The Mexico City Mint (La Casa de Moneda)and the US mint at San Francisco, produced several million of these coins in 1949 to send to Chaing Kai-shek in China to help fund the war against the Communist revolutionaries. But by the fall of 1949, the nationalists had lost and Chaing Kai-shek had fled the country. So, all of the San Francisco minted coins were melted down, and the Mexican coins, like this one, found there way to the Nationalists in Taiwan.

That's a great one! I have a couple old 1910 caballitos and an angel of independence......I think it is called or something close to that....about 1921 or so. Think it is a 2 peso coin. Very pretty. There are also a couple of great soccer coins...one of just a leg. It is also great even though much more modern. All thick enough for your knives I think.
I made a poker table for house in Mexico with inlaid coins at each station. I like Mexican coins.

Yes, lot's of beautiful Mexican silver coins and medals. I'm hoping someone commissions a gold coin knife one of these days! Here's a couple of pics showing a 1911 Caballito and a 1921 Dos Pesos.

What gold coin would you use? Are you cutting these coins in half? Do these knives have individual springs?

Mexican 50 Peso - they're big and they're heavy - about 1.2 ounces of gold, 37 - 39mm diameter. Yes, coins are cut in half. One piece spring for both blades.
